The Institute of Economics and Management opened on September 1, 2016, with a solid background: economic education in the TSU has a history of more than 100 years. The merging of the Faculty of Economics, International Faculty of Management, and Graduate School of Business under the IEM has given a new impetus and allowed to significantly increase the quality of training professionals with multiple competencies that are necessary in a rapidly changing world.

In 5 years we have:

Established a portfolio of competitive education programs.

Created an international Board of Guardians which includes the representatives of world-famous companies, business schools, research centers. Every year, the Board members discuss the directions of the Institute’s development and joint projects.

Established a system of partnership. Our partners participate in developing educational programs, provide places for internships, hold master classes, grant scholarships to the students, and the best graduates have job placement opportunities in these companies.

Opened the Careers Center and Entrepreneurship Center, where one could improve their business skills or create a startup as their graduation work.

The IEM today is more than 1100 students and 70 lecturers, more than 50 corporate partners.

Our graduates work around the world in companies such as PwC, EY, KPMG, Microsoft, McKinsey, АССА, Unilever, SBER, Gazprombank, VTB, Mikran, SIBAGRO, KDV, Sibirskiy Kedr, Lama, create their own businesses, work in the government entities.

We invite you to take part in the celebrations of Institute’s 5th anniversary and plan your participation in an event that would take place on May 20.

If you are one of our alumni and are ready to share your experience, become our partner! To make networking useful for everyone, we would like to ask you to fill in a small alumnus's questionnaire. This will be the beginning of the Alumni Association.

All the information about the anniversary events will be posted in the Institute’s social media: Facebook, VK, Instagram, on the IEM website.

University of London diploma in Tomsk: now accepting applications for SIBAGRO Business and Management scholarship

Until March 31, 2022, IEM TSU and TPU bachelor students can apply to study in the Business and Management program tuition-free. In 2022, 5 students can receive a scholarship to study at the University of London.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd year IEM TSU and TPU students studying in Economics and Management programs can receive a scholarship from SIBAGRO to fully compensate the tuition fees for the Business and Management joint parallel training program conducted by TSU and the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London (LSE).

From the first day of their training, students dive into the working practices of major international companies, encounter the challenges of modern international management, and learn to find opportunities during crises. The program is taught exclusively in English, which allows students to reach the level of a native speaker during its 3 years. The result is tremendous career opportunities, including on the international level.

SIBAGRO is a long-time partner of TSU. Andrei Tyutyushev, Chairman of the company, is a graduate of the Faculty of Economics and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Economics and Management, TSU. TSU’s cooperation with the company takes various forms and directions – the company supports the university through the endowment fund, provides employer-sponsored education and internship opportunities, real-life situation cases for students, as well as employment opportunities for graduates.

“For us and our students, the scholarship program is a very significant thing, as it demonstrates that Russian businesses are interested in investing in human capital and long-term stability of their development strategies, including those relating to human resources management,” notes IEM Director Evgenya Nekhoda.

The scholarship program is aimed at those who are interested in expanding their professional capabilities, including English skills and personal growth. One of the conditions for applying is participation in an employer-sponsored education program: the recipient of the scholarship is obligated to work in the company for at least three years at a position they studied for.

“Our company is growing rapidly, production is increasing, and so does the need for high-skilled specialists. Good employees don’t just appear out of thin air, so we invest in their training,” says Alina Kozyreva, Deputy Chairman of the Board, Human Resources Management, SIBAGRO. “This joint project is an opportunity for students to receive unique education that combines IEM’s management, economics, and finance programs with high-quality training provided by the University of London. Upon completion of their studies, the graduates will be able to take their place in a team of professionals at SIBAGRO and help us develop the company.

The Business and Management joint undergraduate parallel training program by TSU and LSE is the only training program in Siberia that combines TSU’s educational expertise and LSE’s elite specialist training strategy. Natalia Cherepanova, Assistant Professor, Department of Organizational Behavior and HR Management, and the head of the program, stresses that LSE London offers practice-oriented learning with an emphasis on the specifics of international business management.

“Studying in the Business and Management program is not only a definitive advantage and a test of one’s ambition, but also new friends made during summer schools at the University of London. And a graduation ceremony in London with diplomas handed to students by the university’s management staff!” summarizes Natalia Cherepanova.

The scholarships are awarded based on the results of competitive selection.

The deadline for applying is March 31, 2022.

The criteria to apply are as follows:

- students must have a valid (at the time of submitting their application to LSE) international certificate confirming the candidate’s command of the English language, or a level of English sufficient for taking an exam to get one of the following international certificates:

IEM Assistant Professors spoke on Russian and French business trends during ameeting with Cote d’Azur University representatives

IEM Assistant Professors Irina Pavlova and Natalia Cherepanova were invited to speak at Cote d’Azur University (Nice, France) International Month. The event named IAE France International Month included round-table discussions, open lectures by international scientists, and discussions on a wide variety of important problems in economics, management, and marketing.
Irina Pavlova spoke on Russia’s role in international business, with a strong accent on Russian companies operating on a global scale. In her lecture, she focused on the modern trends in Russian export, import and investment activity, and described major Russian companies’involvement in the global economy. Furthermore, Irina told the participants of the meeting about the specifics of Tomsk companies’ export activity, and the development of digital infrastructure and institutions supporting international economic activity, which is especially important for the small and medium businesses.
Natalia Cherepanova spoke about global trends specific to the corporate social responsibility of international companies. The participants of the lecture asked Natalia many questions about how the term “fair trade” has changed in modern circumstances, discussed the pros and cons of trade protectionism, as well as modern trends specific to the corporate social responsibility of Russian and French firms.
Both our colleagues’ lectures were met with great interest from the participants of the online meeting, which included both lecturers and students of the University of Nice. IEM lecturers’ participation in the international event held by Cote d’Azur University will help strengthen our partnership, accelerate the start of thedual degree program for International Management Master’sstudents, and create new opportunities for students and lecturers.
We hope that Natalia Cherepanova and Irina Pavlova’s first – and quite successful – experience with IAE France International Month will help increase our French colleagues’ involvement in the implementation of the dual degree program between our universities.

World experts discussed business at the IEM Online Winter School

On January 27, an international round-table meetingtitled “How do international firms adapt to new challenges?” was held as part of the IEM International Online Winter School program Your Global Opportunities: International Perspectives.
The meeting had more than fifty participants, among which were professors and representatives of business communities of France, China, Saint Petersburg and Tomsk, as well as International Online Winter School and 1st and 2nd year International Management Master's program students.
The key message of the round table was the idea that lately we have all witnessed significant transformations. At the same time, not only global market players, but also regional and local companies and entrepreneurs find themselves exposed to numerous factors of uncertainty in the external environment. The participants of the round table discussed the forces behind these circumstances and their impact on international business.
Irina Pavlova, Assistant Professor, Department of Strategic Management and Marketing, IEM TSU, opened the meeting with an introductory speech, in which she highlighted the features of the current globalization and deglobalization trends stemming from heightened uncertainty of the external environment. Irina provided interesting data about how well the executives of large companies were prepared for black swan events (power outages, cyberattacks, natural disasters and, of course, the pandemic).
She then gave the floor to Professor Christos Apostolakis, Audencia Business School (France), who spoke about global changes taking place before our eyes in the fields of economy, politics, culture and ideology. Despite classical economicsstating that comparative advantage in international trade potentially benefits both sides, we,in fact, see the opposite: inequality in the world is only growing. Rich countries are getting richer and poor countries are getting poorer, saidthe expert.
Professor Vikrant Janawade, head of the International Business Master’s program, Côte d'Azur University (France), in his speech drew attention to the changes taking place in global supply chains during the pandemic. He noted the main areas in which the situation was gradually stabilizing (as shown by accelerated adaptation of supply chains in electronic commerce, reformatting of traditional contracts, use of alternative sources of supply and changes in warehousing and storage systems). According to him, it is very important for business not only to be aware of today’s changes in supply chains, but also to anticipate the effects that will follow.
Andrei Panibratov, Professorat theDepartment of Strategic and International Management, Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg University and Director of the Center for Russian Multinationals and Global Business, described the impact economic sanctions have on Russian companies operating in the global market. He noted that the sanctions have both direct and indirect effects, affecting both specific companies and the economy as a whole, while inevitably affecting the interests of Russia's foreign economic partners. The professor drew attention to the unique sanctions situation Russian businesses find themselves in, and stressed that companies need to take into account recent global changes, including those stemming from the pandemic, in developing strategies for the future.
Semyon Zagainov, CEO of Expo Promoter (China) and lecturer for the International Management Master’s program, presented his take on how the global pandemic has affected international trade. Semyon shared his personal experience in online commerce, its features in Asian countries, and his vision of the future of online platforms. Semyon emphasized that international trade in the futureis inconceivablewithout digitization and gave useful tips on how to become «more digital».
Jean-Paul Larcon, Professor at the Paris School of Commerce (HEC), Member of the IEM Board of Trustees and Scientific Director of the International Management Master's program, delivered the closing statement. He stressed that the topics mentioned by the speakers were not only very relevant but also made it possible to view the process of international companies’adaptation to new challenges from various angles – from the perspectives of the academic and business communities, both in global and national context, taking into account the specifics of international business in a particular country or region.
Professor Olga Nedospasova, Head of the International Management Master's program, thanked the participants of the round table for their presentations, questions and answers. She expressed confidence in the fact that the topics discussed would help students broaden the range of their professional interests and select truly important and promising areas for their thesis research.
“The chance to communicate with distinguished members of the international academic community and high-level international experts gave the students of the Online Winter School an excellent opportunity to appreciate the level of teaching at IEM and decide to enroll in the International Management Master's program next year to continue to interact with Russian and international colleagues during special courses, participate in dual degree programs with Côte d'Azur University and eventually build a successful career in international management.,” she noted.

New tastes from Chile and China: International Management master's program students suggest KDV expand their product line

2nd year International Management master’s program students presented their new product ideas to KDV management. Students from different countries have different outlooks on the matter, which is exactly the point of such cooperation – the possibility of gaining a completely unexpected inspiration from another culture.

The projects were completed as part of the Business/Consulting Projects in International Company training program. Students prepared their propositions during a 4-week period. The results presented at the final online session were quite impressive.

For example, Marina Shevchenko and Zhang Ze (China) proposed a business idea called Happy Hot Pot. They recommended KDV to enter the ready-to-eat meals market which has enormous growth potential. The project’s authors suggest moving away from standard recipes and preparing meals using chefs’ recipes, as well as using high-quality aluminum foil as packaging material. Happy Hot Pot would not only have a variety of tastes, but also be quite healthy: compared to traditional plastic, aluminum foil does not introduce any harmful substances to the food when heated at high temperatures, making the product safer for the consumers’ health.

Zuo Wenzun (China) and Sun Fan’s (China) project called Blind Boxes suggests KDV enter the surprise items market: boxes containing“unexpected” presents that remain unknown for both the giver and the recipient until unpacked. Such boxes can contain toys, candy, souvenirs, cosmetics and other nice little things that can be produced in special series and oriented towards different consumer groups (children, teenagers, adults). The aim of the product is to produce an emotional effect. Its social effects, however, are no less important. Blind Boxes can be used to organize fundraisers (for example, by announcing that a percentage of each box’s cost will be given to orphanages, animal shelters, etc.)

Li Jiahui (China), Laura Rodrigues (Venezuela), and Maerhaba Tumuer (China) proposed KDV to start producing Siwu Candy: sweets that have mild anesthetic and spasmolytic effects due to inclusion of plant ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine in the product. The target segment is very specific –young girls and women who suffer from period pains and premenstrual syndrome. The team’s idea is that these candies are not a medicine to be prescribed by a doctor. They still can be eaten by both men or children. However, Siwu Candies are capable of reducing physical pain, including through psychological and emotional effects: a box of these candies received as a present from husband, partner, parents, elder sister, can be an expression of love, care, and attention during the special periods for women.

John Adebowale Adedeji (Nigeria) prepared a project that outlines the prospects ofproducing mint icecream called I SCREAM. John emphasizedthe specifics of marketing and advertisement for the product, and made clearly formulated arguments as to why the company should invest in this project.

Elena Tretiakova, Ekaterina Filimonova, and Evgeniya Rosenberg’s business idea involved producing chocolate candies called Dushechka (Russian for “Sweetheart”). The slogan for the proposed product is “Say more kind words to your loved ones!”. The project’s authors think that their nut-filled chocolate candies should be sold in white boxes with red patterns on the inside, and each candy should be wrapped in a golden wrapper. Inside each box, there would be a special insert – a card with a famous love poem. Such design should be liked by people who want to express their feelings. Dushechka would bring more romance to life and melt hearts. That is exactly the aim of the proposed marketing andadvertisingstrategy.

Camilo Andres Sanchez Bozo (Chile) proposed KDV to add some “Latin American fire” to the existing product line. His project with a Spanish name So-Pai-Pillas involves producing pumpkin pancakes that could easily be prepared at home using frozen prepackaged ingredients or simply heated up. To everyone’s amazement, Camilo demonstrated a video that showed his mastery of this cooking practice traditional to Spanish-speaking countries.

Projects presented to KDV not only contained original business ideas, but also included professionally completed SWOT analysis, market research, market dynamics evaluation, competition assessment, as well as reasoning behind the choice of target segments, uniqueness of value propositions, cost analysis, breakeven point calculations, suggestions on marketing and advertisement, i.e. everything needed for professional activity in the field of management.

Sergey Smirnov, KDV’sHead of Recruitment, and Yana Tashkova, the company’s Category Manager, found students’ projects very interesting, noting that many of them have a strong national identity, inherent to the countries the students represent. The projects will not be neglected and, quite possibly, will drive the company’s development in new areas of business. KDV is undoubtedly ready to continue working with International Management students.

Two IEM PR Center staff members won Wordsmith awards

Anna Yaroslavtseva, head of IEM Public Relations Center, and Ekaterina Krivolapova, a specialist at the Center, won awards at the Wordsmith-2021 annual regional journalism contest.

Anna won the Online Journalist of the Year award for deportation. space, a large-scale media project, while Ekaterina won the Corporate Media of the Year award for Vestochka children's magazine, published under the Kolpashevo eparchy of the Tomsk Metropole, Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).

www.deportation.space was created by the lecturers and students of the Higher School of Journalism, TSU, together with the TomskGermanautonomy. It tells the story of how the region became the place of exile, what famous people were deported here, with a particular focus on the Volga Germans– the project was created to commemorate the 80th anniversary of their deportation to Siberia. Anna was responsible for compiling all the text content for the project.

“I think that there are several factors that propelled me to victory. First of all – the scale of the project. The amount of work put into it is comparable to a doctoral thesis; it summarized a lot of information from archives, articles, and monographs. Second – the text is very vivid because it includes people’s unique stories, their emotions, and interesting details. We even managed to find the passengers of the very train that arrived in Tomsk on September 17, 1941! Among them were: a violinist in the philharmonic, the basketball player who trained Sergey Belov – the world champion, an accountant of the Yantar store. Third – a lot of things were done for the first time. We managed not only to retrace the route of the freight train that brought the deportees here, but also to learn how it was like on the inside, even the cost of a bowl of soup that they servedin the train station canteen. We compiled a “deportee’s shortlist” consisting of the most essential things that people took with them to the place of their new life. Finally, for the first time in history, we chronicled the deportation of Soviet Germans to Tomsk Region, and answered the question ofwhy they were deported here three times,” reflects Anna.

Tomsk Review published a comprehensive article about the project, which can be viewed here.

Vestochka – the only Orthodox Christian children’s magazine in Tomsk Region – has been published for 10 years now.

“In 2021, our magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary,” says Ekaterina Krivolapova. “I’ve been working on it since 2013 as its editor. Our team is very happy about this victory, because this projectis genuinely wonderful. The magazine is meant for kids, but is read with pleasure by parents as well, and by teachers, who often use it as teaching aid for their Basics of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics classes. Nearly everybody on our team – all wonderful journalists, artists, designers and correctors – works on the project as a volunteer. It brings people joy. That’s why I frequently call our children’s magazine a “joy project”. We cooperate with various educational institutions, with authorities of the region’sdistricts. We have big development plans: we want to create a high-quality website and a big collection of the best works we ever published to help teachers. The journalist community’s recognition is very valuable for me as the project leader.”

Tomsk Time TV filmed a segment about the magazine, which you can watch here.

The contest is sponsored by the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Union of Journalists and is supported by the Administration of Tomsk Region.
