"Transfer of Knowledge: Closing the Gap between Lighting Research and Lighting Design"

Transfer of Knowledge is an online event to present the recently launched Light4Health educational platform, show a series of relevant case studies and discuss light and health related topics with guest speakers from the partner universities and the industry.

Within the framework of the event, lighting designers, developers of lighting systems will share their work cases in different areas of application of lighting solutions. You’ve dreamt about getting an international masters degree in «Light Design» in ITMO without any exams, but missed the application deadline?

Specially for our most creative applicants, we are extending the application deadline of the portfolio competition until the 20th of June.

For the competition, we accept projects of implemented and non-implemented lighting designing solutions in urban environment (buildings, parks, streets) and in the field of the design of interactive environment (projects for exhibition, stage and museum spaces). You can send an application and the scanned documents in the applicant’s personal account on the ITMO site: https://abit.itmo.ru/page/169. Those people, who get 100 points, become the winners of the competition. (There can be more than one winner).

CLD students have presented an audiovisual installation Vestigium

Vestigium is an attempt to talk about human's communication with the environment via light and text. The installation reacts to the viewer's movement structuring and showing the hidden text. A visitor can find itself in the centre of the matrix, and all of his motions and gestures become a key to understand undermeanings that are hidden in the dataset.

"A spontaneous text passes through the programme as a database. At first, a viewer can see "levitating" in chaotic way symbols and letters. Then comes a silhouette. All human's movements are read and filled by personal text. The result of such communication is shown by projectors on the large screens and walls, filling out all" — Dmitry Belonenko, an author of the conception and a student of "Light design" magistracy educational programme.

You can learn more about the installation in an experimental hall "Pavilion" (Birzhewaya line, 14), until the 10th of May 2021. The work on Vestigium was conducted as a part of the "Development and prototyping of light solutions in an interactive environment" academic discipline ("The design of interactive environment" specialisation). Being trained on this course, students-light-designers can acquire their professional portfolio during the process of learning, achieving their ideas in practical terms of scenic, museum and exhibitional areas.

Vestigium is a final installation of the Pavilion experimental exhibition. Summarily, during the exhibition, were shown 9 installations among which were "FLUID", "FLAVIN", "FLAVIN 2.0", "FLAVIN 3.0", "FЁDOR", "Synesteziya" and "Humorem". Each performance was demonstrated from 1 to 3 weeks, then expositions exchanged. The authors of all installations, ITMO University "Light design" magistracy students, have created their works as part of their experimental term projects.

CLD students presented the installation "Synesthesia" at the Museum of Optics»

An interactive exposition is a fantasy about how a sound "looks" and a visual image sound. Interacting with the installation, visitors can experiment with their own perception and turn sounds into "live" light paintings.

The neurological phenomenon, when familiar physical phenomena are endowed with unusual qualities inherent in other sensory organs, has been called "synesthesia" in science. In a synesthete, the senses seem to mix: you can see or touch the sound, hear the color, feel the texture or geometric shape of the melody, and so on.

The author of the installation – a student of the master's degree in Light Design at ITMO University, Kseniia Karmolina – in her work turned to the usual sounds: hum, splash, knock, shot, rustle. Getting them is easy: everything you need is within the scope of the exposure. The viewer can tap, tap the surface of the bowl, play with the materials inside it, and observe the visual changes in the space around it.

The project was implemented using digital technology "kinect". "Each bowl is connected to a contact micro-phone, which reads the sounds from touching it from the outside. With the help of the Touch Designer pro-gram, the audio signal triggers active visual content, and thanks to projectors and Resolume, the content is dis-played on the canvases", – Ksenia Karmolina shares her technical secrets.

Work on the installation was carried out within the framework of the academic discipline "Development and prototyping of lighting solutions in an interactive environment" (specialization "Design of an interactive envi-ronment"). As part of a joint project with the Museum of Optics, undergraduates had the opportunity to demonstrate their work on the site of the museum. "For each visitor, the installation is revealed from a new side. And you can already see the result of conscientious creativity – both the creator of the installation and the audience", – says Elena Bobritskaya, a specialist in educational and methodological work at the ITMO University Museum of Optics.

Students of CLD ITMO University presented the installation FEDOR at the Museum of Optics

An unusual "live" installation named FEDOR likes to communicate with visitors, exchange feelings, reacting to voices and movements of a person in space. You can meet and make friends with FEDOR until March 7 (inclusive) in the experimental Pavilion hall of the Museum of Optics at 14 Birzhevaya Liniya.

By analyzing people's emotions and behaviors, FEDOR responds with an interactive language of light, color, and sound. By changing the hues, pattern, and intensity of the flickering of his glowing vertical tubes, he demonstrates his character and his "feelings" to others. Interaction with the viewer takes place with the help of digital modeling tools, which help to simulate the physical world, the surrounding sensory sensations and create the effect of immersion in mixed reality.

The creator of FEDORA is Anastasia Gubareva, a student of the master's degree in ”Light design” at ITMO University: "In this installation, you need to control your actions and emotions. You will see a "living organism" in front of you. Try to study his behavior, desires, and learn from his experience. He will answer you in the same way: he will try to understand you."

The work on the installation was carried out within the framework of the academic discipline "Development and prototyping of lighting solutions in an interactive environment" (specialization "Design of an interactive environment"). As part of a joint project with the Museum of Optics, undergraduates had a unique opportunity to demonstrate their work at the museum site at 14 Birzhevaya Liniya.

FEDOR is not the only "live" installation of the Pavilion exhibition. Previously, the Museum of Optics presented "FLUID", "PRISMA" and the group project "FLAVIN", dedicated to the work of the famous artist-innovator, the creator of large-scale light objects from fluorescent lamps. The main instrument of this exhibition was daylight lamps, similar to those used by Dan Flavin for his installations of the 60s of the twentieth century.

A total of 16 installations are planned to be shown at the Pavilion exhibition. The installations will be interesting for couples with children, students, and professional lighting designers.

Light4health-2020: results of the second summer school

The second summer school of the international project Light4health, held within the framework of the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership grant program, has ended. This year, in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, classes were held in a new remote format for the project, hosted by Hochschule Wismar in Wismar (Germany).

The main subject of online school in 2020 was “Lighting for Working and Educational Environments”.

The work was conducted in interdisciplinary international groups (39 participants in total), which included students from each partner university. Within its framework, participants comprehensively evaluated the lighting of four spaces on their respective campuses. This involved the analysis of natural and artificial light, and study of the effect of lighting on the daily rhythms of the users. In the course of practical work, students identified and recorded in detail, all the characteristics of these rooms, so that the rest of the team who worked remotely, could accurately understand these spaces.

The classes lasted five weeks and were divided into five modules. Each week was devoted to a specific topic that included a theoretical part (based on prerecorded lectures) and practical tasks, and concluded with a final presentation.

The exhibition of light installations "PAVILION" in ITMO's optics museum.

The CLD ITMO University's officials together with the Optics Museum have opened an exhibition of interactive installations "PAVILION" on the Birzhevaya liniya str., 14. The main difference of the exhibition from any another is an opportunity for everyone to become a co-author of any composition. The sketch and its special effects change depending on a viewer's behaviour.

All of the installations are made by light design students as a part of their experimental coursework. Each project is demonstrated during the week and then expositions change. During the exhibition, 16 installations will be shown.

The "ФЛЮИД" installation may be shown as an example of the exhibition's projects. It consists of vertically aligned light elements. Visitors can walk through and between installations and tactilely interact with them. The installation replies to movement and touch via flicker, light and image changing. Another project "PRISMA" based on an optical effect, that occurs when the light passes through the prism. Communicating with each other, viewers can change colours and create complexity shades.

In the core of communication and interaction between visitors and exhibits immersive technologies are situated. It is a way to imitate the physical world using the means of numerical simulation, creating a sensory experience and an effect of immersion into the mixed reality.

The installations are available for the Optic's Museum visitors from the 14th of December 2020 on the Birzhevaya line str., 14, during the opening hours of the museum.

CLD ITMO University students took part in the COVID - CARE LAB workshop.

This online workshop was held for the first time as part of a joint initiative of five European universities: University of Mons (Mons, Belgium), CLD ITMO University (St. Petersburg, Russia), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), University of Montpellier (Montpellier, France) ), University of Bath (Bath, UK).
