On October 23 we held a discussion with the Dean of the School of International Relations Andrey Sushentsov on the topic of “The Evolving World Order: from US Hegemony to Multipolarity”, moderated by our Club’s president Olivia Ahlund, and with the active participation of students from five continents.
Key assessments made by Prof. Sushentsov:
Can the new poles provide responsibility in their regions?
• Some parts of the world have not yet governed themselves without external interference, and in some cases the regional security architecture is not mature enough to exist without it. Strengthening regional mechanisms is key to ensuring stability in a multipolar world.
Emergence of a Chinese-American bipolarity?
• For this to emerge, the proportions between other powers and these two would need to be 1:10. This is unlikely.
Institutional architecture in multipolarity
• Systems like the United Nations work when their member states understand the balance of power. If this balance is clear, these institutions can effectively solve international problems. If the balance is unclear, all will attempt to change it.
• BRICS is a form of better globalisation which avoids military dominance of any power others.
• Alliances like NATO are obsolete. Now is a problematic time for military alliances.
Diplomacy in multipolarity
• It is now necessary to understand the different cultures of cooperation and confrontation of both one’s partners and opponents to these processes.
“We are living in a world that’s not in the textbooks yet.“
