Quantum Enhanced Machine Learning Research. Complexity. Basic science research studying collective effects in quantum systems.

03/08/2020

Skoltech scientists have shown that quantum enhanced machine learning can be used on quantum data. According to Jacob Biamonte, the head of Laboratory for Quantum Information Processing and a co-author of this paper, the research was focused on problems from condensed matter physics, but such quantum enhanced algorithms equally apply to challenges in materials science and drug discovery. The research was supported by a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

Postdoctoral Researcher (The Theory of Modern Quantum Algorithms)_DHL

Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral research position with a possibility for extension, in the field of theory of quantum computations and quantum algorithms. The position will be held at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), Moscow, Russia. The start date is flexible.

The successful applicant will work in the research group led by Prof Jacob Biamonte in the area of quantum computations and quantum networks, with a focus on quantum enhanced algorithms and error mitigation on experimental devices.

The goals of this project are:

Develop, optimize, and benchmark variational quantum algorithms (e.g. QAOA and VQE).
Implement quantum information processing tasks in the experiments on trapped ions and optical networks
Integrate quantum-computing methods with tensor network theory and/or machine learning.
The applicant should expect interaction with experimental collaborators from Skoltech, MSU and leading theory research groups overseas. In particular, applicants will join an ongoing collaboration between Skoltech, RQC and Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LPI RAS).

Applicants are required to have a background in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication or relative fields. Applicants are expected to use Python and be able to assist in conducting the research of 2-3 PhD students in the team. Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics and a proven record of research in the areas of or quantum computations or quantum information science.

Applications should be sent to [email protected] or to [email protected] with a title ”Postdoc Applicant” and should include:

1) a motivation letter;

2) a CV including a list of publications and list of the referees;

3) a research statement;

The position will remain open till a suitable applicant is found, the applications will be considered until December 20.

PhD Fellowships in Quantum Science and Technology—Skoltech

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is a unique English-speaking international graduate only research university, located just outside of Moscow. Established in collaboration with M.I.T., Skoltech integrates and modernizes the best Russian scientific traditions and offers a host of courses related to quantum science and technology.

PhD Fellowships are now being offered to work in Skoltech’s Deep Quantum Labs – lead by Prof Jacob Biamonte.

Students who have completed or are nearing completion of a masters degree with backgrounds in an area of mathematical sciences with interest in quantum information processing are encouraged to apply.

Continued research projects are along the lines of the topics described on DeepQuantum.AI – these topics include
Quantum Enhanced Algorithms for Machine Learning
Tensor Networks
Hamiltonian Complexity and the Computational Power of Physical Systems

The PhD course takes a minimum of three years but normally it takes four years. Those accepted will receive (i) a tuition waiver (covering the full price of tuition) as well as (ii) a basic starting stipend of 85k RUB (tax free) which goes to 105k RUB (tax free) after proven performance and (iii) medical insurance.

Application procedure. Students should first complete the formal application procedure (see http://msc.skoltech.ru/data-science); they are encouraged to send their full CV and a statement (not more than 300 words) outlining their interest to [email protected] – as part of the initial screening, selected candidates might be contacted with a potential initial screening interview via Skype.
