1. How common is anterior cord syndrome (ACS)?

A. This is a relatively rare injury.

2. How does ACS occur?

A. Most often occurs from occlusion of blood supply to the anterior cord as a result of a flexion injury. It may also occur as a result of vascular or atherosclerotic disease in the elderly.

3. How does a patient with ACD present?

A. Since we know the ANTERIOR portion of the cord is affected, we know only the tracts that run along the anterior cord will be interrupted.

Dorsal columns: Preserved function of their dorsal (posterior) column, so their proprioception and vibration senses are intact.

Corticospinal: Motor (BILATERALLY AFFECTED)

Spinothalamic: Pain and temperature (BILATERALLY AFFECTED)
