Peter S. Piispanen told us about his experience preparing the research paper in our journal "Some new Late Proto-Yukaghir reconstructions with added thoughts and considerations on various etymologies"
https://ural-altai.ru/userfiles/files/publications/Uralaltai-38-82-92.pdf
Why did you choose this topic/ problem?
I am myself a native speaker of Finnish (along Swedish) and the topic of
language history and relatedness has always interested me. During my
Ph.D. studies I started to focus on the Yukaghir languages in order to
study the possible relatedness between the Uralic and the Yukaghir
languages - this produced some very interesting results that will be
presented in the quite near future! Then the study of Yukaghir culture,
genetics and lexicon led tangentially to the study of Yakut, Ewen,
Ewenki, Russian and Mongolic borrowings in Yukaghir, as well as
questions regarding reconstruction. And therefrom appeared this paper!
My long-term goal is to eventually extend the Uralic languages family
tree into becoming a Uralo-Yukaghir family tree, and all reconstructive
work on both language families is important towards this goal regardless
of who performs the research.
How did you conduct the research?
The research was mostly conducted bibliographically using numerous
dictionaries as well as old field notes (found in various archives) and
Russian military documents of these languages. Of course it required a
lot of background information, most of which was available in Irina
Nikolaeva's research on the Yukaghir languages. Handling texts in
English, German and Russian was needed. I applied Nikolaeva's
methodology to the best of my ability for the reconstructions with much
thought and focus on phonology (my own main interest along lexicon in
linguistics). Semantic considerations then, which also led to the extra
end part of corrections in the paper, interestingly allowed the
convergence of earlier separated roots into one root only: I find the
case of 'warmth' > 'some sort of warming clothing; fur', as well as 'to
share mutual warmth (in the night)' > 'to be reconciled with' to be
fairly interesting developments.
How did you get the result?
Reconstructive work is actually not as easy as it looks. Only after
years of studying Yukaghir phonology, morphology and syntax could I
start to grasp the details and techniques for reconstructing Late
Proto-Yukaghir. But once these techniques were in place the results also
fell into place almost automatically, showing the applicability of the
methods. The main difficulty is actually to find relevant, accurate and
trustworthy lexical data from several different centuries.
What is the main discovery?
There are a few conclusions to be made: First, Nikolaeva's
reconstructive work (found in her Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir from
2006) is very well done and very extensive (as is her new meticulous
book from 2020!), and there is currently not very much to add in this
regard, which the meager amount of new reconstructions in the paper
show. Secondly, as an unstated goal of the paper not mentioned, I hope
that these results can be demonstrated to show how similar to the Uralic
languages Yukaghir phonology and root-construction is. It is indeed
fascinating to note how similar to Proto-Uralic forms these
reconstructions are, and I suspect that, going back through Middle
Proto-Yukaghir, back to Early Proto-Yukaghir, that we are then very
close to a common genealogic ancestor for both the Uralic and Yukaghir
languages (i.e. Pre-Proto-Uralo-Yukaghir > Pre-Proto-Uralic and
Pre-Early Proto-Yukaghir; the reasons for the Pre- suffix here is that
some phonological changes actually did occur to some words in going to
Proto-Uralic and Early Proto-Yukaghir from that earliest common
ancestor, one example being: Proto-Uralo-Yukaghir *kurpu 'lung' >
Proto-Uralic *kuppV~*koppV 'lung' and Early Proto-Yukaghir *kurpul
'lung'). I do further hope that I also managed to include some new
considerations regarding semantics and semantic changes.
However, I further suspect that some less studied lexical sources, such
as Jochelson's texts and Collinder's works, could provide us with
additional insights and data for further reconstructions (but more
likely additional borrowings). Finally, the details of semantic notes
and considerations is actually a very fun task! It allows us to consider
how the meanings of words can and do change when borrowed. Furthermore,
of course, correcting the recitation of older documentation is very
important, and I hope some aspects could even "entertain" the reader.
How can this be useful to other readers?
Good question. It should mainly be of interest to historical linguistics
focusing on the northeastern Siberian languages, but also for those with
general interests in languages and language documentation and
methodology. Perhaps some readers could also become acquainted with the
Yukaghir languages and populations for the first time through this
paper.
