There is a reason why CELTA and Trinity Cert. Tesol have become so widely recognised as teaching qualifications around the world, and it is not just because of their brand recognition.

It’s because of the role that assessed teaching practice plays in these courses. This is why at BKC Teacher Training Centre, our Communicative English Teaching course, or BKC CET for short, also has assessed teaching practice at its core.

Let me explain.

Of course we can get inspiration, ideas and insights from pure methodological input sessions. Especially because teacher trainers are also teachers, and teachers are a practically-minded bunch, who make their seminars practically-focused.

But teaching is a skill - in order to get better at it, you have to actually do it. Because there is a difference between understanding something and putting it into practice.

There is also a difference between putting it into practice on your own, and doing it with the help and feedback from an experienced colleague. This support is also what makes assessed teaching practice on BKC CET so useful. You will be assessed by experienced teacher trainers, who are also current, verified CELTA tutors.

Basically, a certificate from such a course shows the rest of the teaching community that you can teach, not just talk about teaching.

To communicate successfully we need to know the language we are trying to use, both its grammar and its vocabulary. But we also need to be effective in negotiating the four skills of reading and listening, speaking and writing.

Naturally these areas form the bread and butter of any language programme and an English teacher’s repertoire. But then, bread and butter doesn’t have to be boring. Or stale. And the butter should definitely not be rancid.

Coming up in July, we have three courses aimed at broadening your knowledge of the different up-to-date techniques, methods and approaches in these core areas of teaching.

We think four intense days is enough time to go deeper than is usually possible on more generally-focused training programmes or individual one-off seminars, but short enough that it is not overwhelming, and so that we can keep the focus firmly practical.

📌 BKC Develop Advanced Language Awareness Course

People who have learned the language they teach from the ground up have, in many ways, an advantage over native speakers in that they are generally quite confident about the technicalities of grammar and so on right from the start of their careers.

But the thing about pedagogical rules for grammar is that while they might be easier to digest, sometimes they are quite, quite wrong.

Such as the one about ‘some’ being for positive sentences, and ‘any’ being for negative ones.

And sometimes we forget what the underlying purpose of different grammar structures is altogether.

It’s very easy to ignore, for example, that the passive is a way to glue texts together more coherently, or that tag questions are a powerful persuasive tool for dragging the answer ‘yes’ out of people, because we (and the students) are more consumed with trying to get the auxiliary verbs conjugated correctly.

This course aims to help experienced teachers of whatever background get a new perspective on the rules of the English language.

It is also a good way to prepare for the language analysis requirements of the different Delta modules too.

BKC-Ih Teacher Training Centre The BKC-IH Moscow Teacher Training Centre is a Cambridge certified centre which offers professional courses for teachers who strive to be better.

We invite you to sign up for the BKC Communicative Online Teaching course, starting on Tuesday 31st May.

This course is tailor-made to help confident face to face teachers become equally confident online teachers. We will look at mastering the tools, but also at adapting techniques, activities and materials design. We will look at what online teaching does really really well, and how to overcome any problems.

The trainer, Heather Belgorodtseva, is a real enthusiast for online teaching. She is basing the course on her experience of supporting teachers over two years of running online CELTA courses, and the expertise BKC has gained from operating its large online school.
