Dear friends! During this pre-holiday rush we have prepared an amusing review for you. Hope, you’ll like it)

Have you ever wondered, how do children learn to forgive?

The ability to forgive is vital for kids and adults especially when it comes to harmonizing relationships and avoiding future conflicts. The main question is how this mechanism of forgiveness works for children?

Kelly Lynn Mulvey, an associate professor of psychology at North Carolina State University conducted an interesting study with her colleagues. 185 children, between the ages of 5 and 14 took part in the recent experiment. During the in-depth interview with each child, researchers collected information about the ability of each child to understand whether someone else's emotions and feelings are different from their own. Each participant was told that they were a part of a specific team either the green team or the yellow team. Thus, from the children’s understanding, some of the participants were in their group, while others were not. As a result, it led to the first and main conclusion of the experiment: children are more likely to forgive people who are “in their group” (that means they are friends and should stick together). The second interesting conclusion was that children who have better developed abilities to understand themselves and others forgave other people easier and faster. And the third conclusion of this study was that children are more likely to forgive someone if their offenders apologized.

To sum up, in order to teach children to forgive, it is necessary to teach them to understand the rationale behind their own actions. The better children understand how certain actions affect people around them, the easier it will be for them to ask for forgiveness and to forgive.
Understanding of one's own and others' mistakes is the key to starting the mechanism of forgiveness.

Hi friends!

We’ve found an interesting article about brain mechanics and the functions of folds and wrinkles.

Hope, you will enjoy!

Please share your thoughts in the comments)

Work at daytime, study at 5 o‘clock
Science of Learning and Assessment changes to an afternoon format

This week HSE professors discussed student assessment of teaching. SoLA also has got some news!

After trying circumstances of the last year, when students had to adapt to hybrid, full online and offline studying formats, they realized that a day job might be a better decision rather than working late in the evening. Many students work for the laboratories at HSE, that is why our classes are changing to the afternoon!

Science of Learning and Assessment is still an in-person Master’s Program, but it provides afternoon classes.

Now everyone with flexible working hours can attend our program! We are waiting for the future psychometrics experts and specialists in neuromethods and sciences of learning.

Universal Design in Assessment

Regarding architecture, universal design stands for creation of comfortable and affordable environment for people of different physical characteristics and capabilities. But what does the universal design in assessment mean?

Irina Brun (the teacher of the SoLA Master's Program) will explain it to all the attendants of the lecture with pleasure. How should the assessment look like in order to be able to show one’s knowledge and skills in the best possible way? How should a test for dyslexics be done? Or for students with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity? Which countries have such tests become a commonplace?

Unfortunately for our foreign readers the lecture will be held in Russian. Follow the link to watch the webinar on July 16, 18:00.

Open House Lecture: "What do we study with neuroimaging methods? Implications for education"

One of the most important parts of studying mental processes such as memory, attention, emotion is technology. Usage of advanced non-invasive neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) improves the ways we can understand cognition and its development.

Let's discover cutting-edge technologies together!

Speaker: Andrei Faber

The event will be held in Zoom on July, 10th, 18:00-19:00 Moscow time. Pre-registration is required for this event, follow the link:

Science of learning and assessment: job opportunities after graduation

At Science of learning and assessment program meetings, applicants often ask, "What and where can I work afterwards?" We decided that first-hand stories are better than any retelling - so we called alumni.

Where does the new program get its alumni? SOLA is based on the Measurement in Psychology and Education program, whose graduates had already been working for ten years in a diverse range of organizations: public and private, educational and recruitment.

We called several graduates of different years to talk about their experiences as assessment professionals.

Registration link is available on the event announcement page: https://www.hse.ru/ma/sla/announcements/480266582.html

Cheers! The 2021 admission campaign has begun!

The Science of Learning and Assessment master's program awaits students who are ready to connect the sciences of measurement and development in one interdisciplinary field.

New HSE online offices are waiting for your portfolios: https://enrol.hse.ru

The campaign runs until July 26. But we advise not to wait for the last day to submit an application (in previous years, the system could not withstand the overload on the last day of admission)

Open lecture "How we prepare specialists who can help provide life-long learning" by Marie Arsalidou, PhD

Our brain is amazing. Studies show that people can even learn how to echo-locate. Can humans learn anything? This lecture will cover some knowledge about cognition, brain development and our life-long potential for learning. It will also point to how you can participate in research at HSE that contributes to the science of learning and assessment.

June, 18, 2021 18.00 (6 PM Moscow time)

Language: English
