3D-artist and tutor at Bang Bang Education Sasha Katz — on her latest works, creative process and feminism.
⠀
● "I'm constantly creating something so as not to go crazy. Now I'm working on three series at the same time. The first is about women, cats and my Moscow friends whom I miss to death. The second is about soft p**n (which is why my Twitter is now marked as 'sensitive'). The third — about my imaginary slutty 3D brother Borka Lux who does some commercial commissions for me and is very pliable."
⠀
● "The feminist agenda is very important and exciting to me. I'm interested in working with unconventional beauty, body positive forms, and in reinventing identities."
⠀
● "There are flashes in my head, and I immediately write them down. The notes look like this: 'a tied woman hangs and sways', 'a cat's paw on a face', 'a toe in a mouth', 'many hands touching a face', 'shaking butt.' Then I go through them and reasonably choose what to do."
⠀
● "Now there are many crypto galleries where collectors can buy artworks for cryptocurrency—it's super cool and fresh. Good price tags and traceable provenance. A great alternative to dusty galleries with limited space and a high threshold. And Instagram is impossibly tedious with its censorship."
⠀
● "It is important to me that students distinguish good work from bad. So that they try something completely new and different from the "daily render", so that they are interested in the unconventional and ugly."
"A fact of my biography that strikes the imagination: the first tour guide at the Bauhaus was Walter Gropius. Which makes us colleagues in some way."

"History of animation in pursuit of reality resembles that of art: first artists tried to reproduce what we see with our eyes more and more accurately. But then there was a 180° turn — and abstract art emerged. So now, when animation has almost reached the peak of its potential in terms of realism, there is also a reverse movement. Look at the Balenciaga campaigns. They often use the semi-realistic images combining realism and abstraction.
⠀
It’s interesting how we can rethink realism, interpret it in our own way. Merge those two realities and see how they can interact in their contrast. For example: realistic objects that move unrealistically, or unrealistic objects that are placed in the context of the real environment.
⠀
Don’t necessarily use the technology for its intended purpose, go a little out of the comfort zone. Be interested in and try new things. It is important in our work."

Hi. We are Bang Bang Education, an online school of design and illustration based in Moscow. Over the last 5 years we launched dozens of courses, made two films on design history, produced a few festivals and numerous interviews with industry professionals. But most importantly — we managed to establish a community of designers and students who trust our expertise and share our values. Below are those values we manifest:
⠀
It all starts with a point. It contains all human qualities and infinite potential. Point is the result of the first contact of an instrument with the surface.
⠀
Humanity is the basis. Beauty and functionality are forces subordinate to it.
⠀
Evil can seem attractive, so our main instruments are critical thinking and freedom of expression.
⠀
Our value is openness to different points of view, and at the same time — independence of thought and self-examination: whether my opinion actually belongs to me and where honest and fearless research is leading to.
⠀
Fear is a sign of where to go in order to get stronger.
⠀
The school develops visual culture, talks about ethics and reflection.
⠀
Designers and artists who shape the image of our world are able to help people become better.
⠀
To be — sensitive to the world and a part of something bigger. Not a mechanism, but a creative force.
⠀
Ideals have to be put into practice. We are against moving by inertia, thoughtlessly and irresponsibly.
⠀
To act at the limit of possibility. And to remember that inaction and ignorance is also a choice we are responsible for.
⠀
We are free to set our own coordinate system, and the boundaries that need to be overcome are usually inside. To explore the world and renew yourself, permanently.
⠀
No skills and knowledge are enough. To study, so as not to ossify and to maintain clarity.
