Happy Halloween guys! 🎃👻💀

A long time ago people in the UK didn’t really celebrate Halloween. It was an American thing. In the UK there’s a different celebration which occurs on November 5 - Guy Fawkes Night. But Halloween arrived in Britain and today it’s also celebrated there.

Halloween is an ancient holiday and has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter. The festival symbolizes the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead. It was believed that on the night of October 31, ghosts of the dead would revisit the world and large bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits.

Throughout Britain, Halloween has traditionally been celebrated by playing games such as bobbling for apples, telling ghost stories, watching horror films, carving pumpkins, organizing ghoulish events and putting on terrifying costumes, going trick-or-treating, visiting pumpkin patches and farms with magical pumpkin-themed events.

We’re having a heatwave! 🥵Aren't these the dog days of summer?! ☀️Sometimes temperatures get up over 30°C, which is extreme indeed!

How can you describe hot weather like this in English? 🤔 There are multiple ways depending on how intense the heat is. If it’s pleasantly hot, you can say something along the lines of

📌a balmy summer evening - приятный летний вечер
📌glorious weather - восхитительная погода
📌sun-drenched beaches - солнечные пляжи
📌basking in the sun - греюсь на солнышке.

But sometimes the weather is unpleasantly hot, then you might need a different repertoire of expressions:

📌it’s boiling out there - очень жарко на улице (свариться можно)
📌it’s baking hot - адская жара
📌it’s like an oven out there - на улице как в печке
📌what a sticky day! - сегодня парит
📌torrid weather (hot and dry) - знойная погода

📌sizzling summer days - палящие летние дни

What kind of effect can heat have on you? You can say

📌I’m melting - я плавлюсь от жары
📌I’m roasting in the hot sun - я жарюсь под палящим солнцем
📌I am sweating buckets/like a pig - я обливаюсь потом, с меня льёт
If you spend lots of time in the sun,
📌you can get a sunburn (ожог) or heatstroke (тепловой удар).

Right, try to keep cool as a cucumber 🥒during super hot summer days and follow some basic rules when the heat gets a bit too much: wear a sun hat 👒, drink plenty of water 💦, avoid staying in direct sunlight ☀️, put on suncream 🧴and don’t overwork yourself 😫!

Солнечно, радостно, классно - лето пришло не напрасно. 😎☀️🌞Лето - это счастье, хорошее настроение, конец депрессиям, красивый загар, время, когда можно забыть о занятиях английским и отдохнуть! 👙🌊🏖Но это не совсем так… 🙁Вы можете выучить язык только тогда, когда он станет частью вашей повседневной жизни! Если вы думаете, что позанимаетесь английским с преподавателем с сентября по май 2 раза в неделю и подтянете язык до нужного уровня, вы глубоко заблуждаетесь! Чтобы выучить язык, нужно менять образ жизни. Каждый день слушаем, читаем, смотрим, говорим, пишем на языке. Одним из важных навыков в процессе изучения языка является noticing - умение обращать внимание на то, как носители выражают те или иные мысли. 🧐📝Читая и слушая, мы порой понимаем выражение, но воспроизвести его потом в своей речи оказывается сложно. Поэтому мы берём на вооружение такие высказывания и используем их. Ловите несколько хороших фраз, которые помогут вам звучать естественно:
✍️wake up in the small hours and lie tossing and turning - просыпаться на рассвете и ворочаться с боку на бок;
✍️It’s one of these thingies for keeping papers together - это такая штука для скрепления листов бумаги;
✍️wrap kids in cotton wool - трястись над ребёнком;
✍️trust me, I am not joking - поверь мне, я не шучу;
✍️old habits die hard - от старой привычки трудно избавиться;
✍️run out of steam - выдохнуться, измотаться;
✍️scream at the top of one’s lungs - кричать изо всех сил;
✍️like a broken record - говорить одно и тоже снова и снова, как пластинка, которую заело.

❄️🌁The Beast from the East or the Easty Beasty as the English kindly call a cold snap hit some parts of the UK a week or so ago. In many Instagram posts people commented that ‘a blanket of snow covering most parts of the UK was a pleasant rarity’ for the English and that ‘they were treated to a rare winter wonderland’. ⛄Kids were out playing in the snow before it turned into slush and puddles. But here in Russia severe winter conditions are nothing out of the ordinary. We are used to below zero temperatures and piles of snow everywhere. 🚙In fact, for car drivers and their vehicles winter is a test of endurance indeed. In the mornings when parents are in a rush to take their kids to school and get to work on time, preparing your car for a drive can be a real nuisance. 🌨️🚘To be honest, the whole process of starting your car can be a sure indicator that it is going to be one of those days! We usually spend some time clearing ice and snow off our car or even worse shoveling out our car. When eventually we dig the car out, we realize that the car door froze shut. We spend yet more time trying to get into our car if not from the front, then from the back. After de-icing car windows and warming up the engine for a bit, you are kind of ready to go, but wait! Moisture starts building up inside and you can’t see a thing, so you have to unwind your windows to let some cool air in. Winter wonderland could be either a dream or a nightmare.

‼️PS This morning my car wouldn’t lock, it just kept unlocking itself. I checked all the doors, made sure seat belts were not trapped in the door. Nothing. I was about to hit the roof...

🍃🍁It is that time of year when we say goodbye to summer and say hello to autumn! It is the season when leaves change from green to red, orange, yellow, gold, and rust. 🍂Trees shed their beautiful leaves, they fall to the ground like a carpet which is both soft and crisp to walk on. You can rake leaves up and jump in them! 🍃The air becomes brisk and the wind gets much colder, which means it’s time for warm jackets and scarves. 🌬️You can begin to smell winter coming. In the USA and the UK people eat apples, pumpkins and chestnuts. 🎃It is the time for Halloween parties, for which you can dress up as a spooky ghost, monster or witch! 👻Boo!!!
🍁There are some nice expressions connected with autumn which are worth learning!
📌Nippy - холодный, морозный (разг.) e.g. You might want to wear an extra layer. It’s a bit nippy out.
📌Invigorating (air, day) - бодрящий (воздух, день) e.g. It was such an invigorating autumn day!
📌A blustery day - ветреный день e.g. Let’s stay in, it’s so blustery outside today.
📌Vivid/vibrant - яркий e.g. The oak in your yard is so vibrant. I can’t believe how red the leaves are!
📌Kaleidoscopic - постоянно и быстро меняющийся e.g. I love the kaleidoscopic change these woods go through in autumn.
📌Autumn years (twilight or golden years) - зрелые годы, e.g. Now that you’re retired from work, how do you plan to spend your autumn years?
📌Squirrel sth away - откладывать деньги e.g. As soon as I get paid, I squirrel away some money away so I won’t be tempted to spend it.
📌Take a leaf out of sb’s book - брать пример с кого-то e.g. I think I’m going to take a leaf out of your book and start going for a run first thing in the morning.
📌An old chestnut - история «с бородой», старый избитый анекдот e.g. Not that old chestnut again!
📌Turn over a new leaf - исправиться, начать новую жизнь e.g. Apparently, he’s turned over a new leaf and he’s not smoking any more.
🍁Autumn is great and as Elizabeth Lawrence once said “Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.”

☀️After a very short summer break we got back into the swing of things and since then we have been extremely busy. 📚It has been one thing after another. We feel as if there isn’t enough time in a day to accomplish all what we want to do. How is life at your end? Do you know any other ways of saying ‘I am busy’? No? It’s time to expand your vocab then.
1️⃣be swamped with work - завален работой, e.g. There’s no way I can go out tonight. I’m absolutely swamped right now.
2️⃣be slammed with work - завал на работе, e.g. Two people in my department quit this month. I’m totally slammed with work now.
3️⃣to have a lot on one’s plate - иметь много дел, быть занятым по горло, e.g. She's got a lot on her plate - especially with two new projects starting this week.
4️⃣to have one’s hands full (with something) - хлопот полон рот, e.g. Shelley has her hands full with three kids under five.
5️⃣to be up to one’s eyeballs/neck in something - быть занятым по горло, по уши в работе, e. g. I'd like to help, but I'm up to my neck at the moment.
6️⃣have a lot of irons in the fire - выполнять несколько дел одновременно, e.g. I have a lot of irons in the fire at work right now and it's going to be tricky to balance all of them over the next few weeks.
7️⃣be snowed under - завален работой, e.g. I found myself snowed under with work.8️⃣be as busy as a beaver/bee - трудиться, как пчелка, e.g. 🐝Can we meet next week instead? I'm busy as a bee right now.
😀Well, we hope that you don’t run round like a headless chicken trying to get things done and are not on the go all day. Make sure you don’t bite off more than you can chew, otherwise you’ll choke! 🍃Take regular breaks and get your much needed R&R!!!
