University observatories added to Tentative Lists of UNESCO World Heritage
The announcement was made in December 2020.
The nomination process was initiated in December 2019 when Kazan welcomed the Astronomy and World Heritage Forum. It was supervised by Kazan Federal University and supported by President of Tatarstan, Ministry of Culture of Russia, and International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Russia. In 2020, KFU delegations visited Hamburg and Paris to familiarize themselves with local observatories and seek help in arranging the nomination dossier. Meetings with UNESCO experts in world heritage were also held. The sides agreed to include the observatories into UNESCO’s Upstream Process.
Currently, of the 500 laboratories existing in the world, only 10 are inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage List. Only two are listed as separate objects, and eight others are parts of various complexes.

Research shows how digitization influences performance of preschoolers
KFU’s project was funded by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
The focus of this particular research was on how cognitive regulation in preschoolers (5 to 7 years old) can be affected by physical activity. It was headed by Associate Professor Alla Tvardovskaya (Department of Preschool Education).
A questionnaire was held with 469 parents. It showed that an average preschool child spends two hours a days in front of a TV screen during a workday. 21% of parents admitted that they often don’t have time to spare to children in the evening because of workload, so their kids can watch cartoons without limitations, which usually amounts to 3-4 hours a day. Only 20% of parents said that their kids don’t have screen time on weekdays because they are otherwise engaged, mostly by hobbies or out-of-home educational activities.
34% of children don’t use any smartphones or tablets at all; 52% do have access, but no more than an hour a day.

Assessment of language acquisition by bilingual Russian-Italian children
A study by academics of the two countries appeared in International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism.
The team comprised Elena Gorobets (Kazan Federal University), Martina Ozbič (Università degli studi di Trieste), Nadja Ruhl (Università degli Studi di Udine), Darya Polkina (Nuova Scuola Russa Знание), and Andrea Marini (University of Udine).
For the research, 63 children were selected – 21 monolingual Russian speakers, 21 monolingual Italian speakers, and 21 bilingual Russian-Italian speakers. They were tested for non-verbal IQ and then offered a battery of neurolinguistic tests ‘Batteria per la Valutazione del Linguaggio in bambini dai 4 ai 12 anni’ and its Russian analog BVL_RU.

“Most infectious diseases in humans and animals are in one way or another associated with the formation of biofilms - microbial consortia immersed in the high molecular weight matrix they release, consisting of proteins, nucleotides and polysaccharides, which determines the extreme resistance of bacteria to adverse factors, including antibiotics and the body's immune system. The presence of pathogenic bacteria in the biofilm composition significantly reduces the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy and significantly slows down the wound healing process,” explains co-author, Associate Professor Airat Kayumov. “In mixed biofilms, synergistic and mutualistic interactions are observed between bacteria, as a result of which the treatment of mixed infections is much more difficult and prolonged. For example, biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and aeruginosa are very difficult to treat, and in cases of cystic fibrosis, they are often fatal.”
This particular research has shown that S. aureus is able to form cell conglomerates in the P. aeruginosa biofilm matrix, which is one of the reasons for its low susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs in mixed infections, probably due to the protective properties of the Pseudomonas biofilm matrix.
