On 20-21 December 2021 NArFU experts took part in a workshop entitled «Treasures from the Barents Nature — What´s Going on and Future Prospects» co-organized by Lapland University of Applied Sciences, Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) and Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE). The event continued a series of seminars in the framework of the international project «Treasures from the Northern Nature» funded by the Kolarctic CBC programme. The event was preceded by a similar workshop in Arkhangelsk and a round table discussion on 14 December focusing on EC’s long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas up to 2040.
🌲 Alongside the project’s partners — Lapland University of Applied Sciences, Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), NArFU and Luonnonvarakeskus (Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) — the workshop also featured representatives of the University of Oulu and the Regional Council of Lapland.
🌲 The thematic scope of the workshop encompassed multiple use of forests, reindeer meat production, agroforestry, mushroom potential, berry yield forecasting, the socioeconomic and legal aspects of forest ownership and use. Professor Sergey Koptev, Head of NArFU Department of Silviculture and Forest Management, delivered a presentation on the potential use of non-wood forest products in the Arkhangelsk Oblast and the results of the previous TreNat Workshop held at NArFU on 1-2 December 2021.
🌲 Spanning a wide range of nature products related issues, the discussion centered on the challenge of maximizing the potential of non-timber forest products in the interests of northern rural communities. An effective way of addressing the problem is, of course, through continuing joint work under international projects. That is why the workshop also included presentations on project funding options and the possibilities of joint applications in the framework of the Kolarctic CBC 2021-2027 and Interreg Aurora.
🌲 The workshop was the last major event in the framework of the Treasures from the Northern Nature project, which is approaching its finish, and also featured a presentation of the TreNat project video. The video and the series of networking events conducted in a hybrid format in Russia, Finland and Norway summed up the work of the international team of experts dedicated to raising awareness of the great potential of the natural products of the North. The work will hopefully be elaborated upon and continued under new joint initiatives.
