Our lab has reached a new level!

Colega noastră Dr. Monica Ionita-Scholz, afliliata Laboratorul de Biometrie Forestiera a publicat un articol impresionat în prestigioasa revistă Science, despre topirea Ghețarul 79° N din nord-estul Groenlandei. Acesta formează în prezent cea mai mare limbă de gheață plutitoare din Groenlanda, dar este grav amenințat de încălzirea globală: apa caldă din Atlantic topește limba de jos a ghețarului. Cu toate acestea au descoperit acum că temperatura apei care curge în peștera ghețarului a scăzut între 2018 și 2021, chiar dacă oceanul din regiune s-a încălzit în mod demonstrabil din ce în ce mai mult în ultimele câteva decenii. Această încetinire a fost determinată de o creștere a frecventei circulației atmosferice de tip blocaj, care a adus aer rece arctic prin strâmtoarea Fram.

We are pleased to announce our first international training school on Wood Identification, organized on 8-14 October 2023 at the Forest Biometrics Laboratory, Faculty of Forestry, "Stefan cel Mare" University of Suceava (Romania).
We aim to provide all participants with knowledge of the wood structure, its identification, and the methods to support the identification process. The course will offer a unique opportunity to learn and practice microscopic and macroscopic wood identification.
The training school costs 400€, including meals, accommodation, and course material.

Împreuna cu Ionut Cristea am scanat LiDAR cea mai veche biserica de lemn din Europa- Biserica lui Dragos de la Putna. In cadrul unui proiect anterior, echipa noastra a datat dendrocronologic Biserica și a rezultat ca, aceasta a fost construită in jurul anilor 1390-1400, fiind mutată de Stefan cel Mare la Putna in anul 1490. In cele ce urmează vom publica istoria si datarea ”certificatului de naștere” a Moldovei.

The New Year 2023 started with very good news for us. Ama Piermattei (https://biometrie.usv.ro/?team=alma-piermattei-phd) is the new member of our research team.

Alma Piermattei has a B.Sc. (2007) in Forestry and Environmental Sciences, a M.S. (2010) in Technical and Agricultural Sciences, and a Ph.D. (2015) in Forest Ecology and Management from the Marche Polytechnic University (Italy). She was visiting scholar at Coimbra University (Portugal), at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (Tucson – AZ), and at the Swiss Federal Research Institute (Switzerland). She held postdoctoral fellowships at the Marche Polytechnic University and at the Swiss Federal Research Institute.

Since May 2017 she is a Technical Laboratory Research Assistant at the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge working in the field of Dendrochronology (tree rings) and Tephrochronology (volcanic ash). She is fascinated by understanding past environmental and climate changes using proxy records such as tree rings and tephra layers. In particular, she is involved in different projects exploring environmental, climatic, and genetic effects on plant growth, and in identifying volcanic ash in sediment cores, peat bog and ice cores, and in archeological caves from eastern Africa, the UK, Europe, and Antarctica.
