47 data points. Before breakfast. From a child who just wanted cartoons.

One tap isn’t one piece of data. It’s ten. Location. Time. Device. What they watched. How long.

Your child made all 47, and can’t see a single one.

Alex couldn’t either. Until he met his Data Twin.

Alex and the Data Twin is live 🥳

Your child has a twin made of data.

Not a real twin, of course.

A version of them built from photos, apps, accounts, posts, searches, clicks, and all the small traces that collect around a person online.

In Alex and the Data Twin, Alex discovers that this other version of him exists in the data world. Through his adventure, children begin to understand what happens to the things we share online, and why consent matters.

This is a picture book for children and the grown-ups reading with them.

For parents.
For teachers.
For aunties and uncles.
For anyone who wants to explain the data world without turning it into a lecture.

The conversation should start much earlier than it usually does.

Alex and the Data Twin is available now.

🌟 We’re immensely grateful for the outpouring of support for our mission to bring vital data literacy to children worldwide through our magical book series!

😮 Why are we here together? 13 Years ago, many of you will remember, this happened:

Target used data analytics to identify products that could indicate a customer was pregnant, and they would then send that customer targeted advertisements and coupons for baby items.
While well-intentioned for marketing purposes, this backfired severely when a teenage girl's father received the pregnancy-related advertisements at home before the daughter shared the news with her family.

You might think a long time has passed and a lot has changed (right?), but has enough changed 🤔 ?

· Stories continue to emerge about companies testing or misusing kids' data in questionable ways (e.g. Facebook, TikTok). In 2021 alone, six significant platforms paid fines totalling over $15 million for illegally collecting data on children.
· The types of data collected have expanded from just browsing history to include social media activity, location data, biometrics and more. Research shows over 90% of apps share kids' sensitive data like locations and phone identifiers with third parties.

· Most schools still do not educate children on how their data is harnessed, leaving them uninformed and vulnerable. Only 24% of teachers report feeling confident covering data privacy topics in their classrooms.

Get involved now. Together we can create a future where kids understand and control their digital lives. Back to our mission to put data knowledge into children's hands and spread the word, we’re revolutionizing the approach to data literacy 🤗

Meet Alex, an ordinary boy who embarks on extraordinary adventures in the data world with his data twin DT! 👦 💫

Alex was created by the duo of Barbara Lanz and Shirley Werchota. They authored the imaginative story, while tech expert and mother Shirley provided the data literacy concepts that Alex explores. Mamta Panara gave Alex,
DT and the whole data world life by illustrating them, all the way from Nairobi,
Kenya.

Together they were inspired to write this book seeing kids grow up in an increasingly data-driven world without proper education about how data impacts them personally. Their mission is to create the first data-literate generation! 📚

In this book, Alex journeys through the "data world" and gradually understands the impact of data in his life. Kids will learn key data literacy lessons in a fun way! 🌟

We're soon launching a Kickstarter to bring this visionary book to life and fulfill every child's data literacy potential. Be the first to get updates when we go live! 🚀

This is just Phase 1 of our plan for a series of books exploring more and more data literacy concepts, teaching materials, workshops, apps and more. Help us educate kids to navigate their data-filled world safely and wisely! 🎓
