SOMMERFEST 7— the summer festival for the people of Waldkinder. Key takeaways from another challenging year.

DIFFERENT. Keeping learning alternative in a world that still measures educational success through grades, memorization and compliance.

This is probably our hardest battle.
And our greatest reward.

At 10, our learners might not recite the multiplication tables without hesitation.

But they can start a business. Work out costs. Set a price. Talk to people. Make mistakes. Lose money. Try again.

Because learning doesn’t mean everyone knowing the same things, at the same time, in the same way.

In the early years, nature is a constant teacher. Children grow through freedom, movement, exploration and relationships. They learn to trust themselves, speak their minds and act with confidence.

From 6 onwards, freedom comes with accountability. They begin to own their time, their choices and their learning.

Because there is no single timeline for becoming capable.

Every child has their own path. Their own rhythm. Their own potential.

There is no one-size-fits-all childhood.
There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all education.

Being a forest school educator means never stopping learning.

Behind every day spent in the woods lies preparation, patience, study, reflection, and, perhaps most importantly, the willingness to embrace the unpredictable.

Because nature and children have this in common: they both live fully in the present.

When we received the support of the .sibiu for an educational project we are part of, we knew one of the very first things we wanted to invest in was the educators.

There is now overwhelming scientific evidence showing that meaningful learning happens all the time outdoors. But also behind what looks like “just children playing in nature” is a deep understanding of child development, attention, curiosity, and how the brain learns best.

We thus had the privilege of learning from , co-founder of in Sibiu, former Forest School educator, certified nature-based coach, TEDx speaker, and facilitator of outdoor experiences that help people reconnect with themselves, each other, and the natural world.

Together, we explored Flow Learning®, Joseph Cornell’s internationally recognised framework for creating meaningful learning experiences in nature. Rather than teaching about nature, Flow Learning guides children through a sequence that awakens enthusiasm, focuses attention, encourages direct experience, and ends with reflection—creating the conditions where curiosity naturally becomes learning.

What we always knew is that the Waldkinder team’s greatest strength has always been its heart. 🩶

Our children are surrounded by educators who genuinely care, who love spending time with them, and who are willing to keep learning year after year.
That foundation matters more than performing every activity perfectly.

We know this is the right way to go and we’ll never stop learning. 🌿

Multi privesc astfel de fotografii și isi zic: copii care se joacă cu apa și noroi.

Știți ce vedem noi?.

Vedem entuziasm. Și tocmai acesta este primul pas al învățării.

Asta am învățat acum aproape două săptămâni la modulul de formare de educatori în natură și am început să integrăm în mod conștient metoda Flow Learning, dezvoltată de Joseph Cornell, unul dintre pionierii educației în natură. Ideea ei este surprinzător de simplă: înainte să încerci să înveți un copil ceva, ajută-l să își dorească să descopere.

Prea des, adulții încep cu informația.

Copiii încep cu emoția.

Flow Learning pornește exact de aici. Din drumetia care îi face să uite de timp - și de masa. Din jocul sau experiența care îi prinde cu totul. Din provocarea care îi face să spună: “Mai vreau!”

Abia după ce energia grupului este vie și atenția apare natural, urmează explorarea.
Observarea. Descoperirea. Conexiunea. Reflecția.

Nu este o metodă despre a face activitățile “mai distractive”. Este despre a respecta modul în care funcționează creierul uman.

Flow Learning ne spune ca entuziasmul nu este un bonus al învățării.
Este condiția din care învățarea autentică devine posibilă.

Iar data viitoare când vedeți copii alergând, udându-se, râzând și acoperiți de noroi, poate nu vă mai întrebați “Oare când învață?”

Probabil acesta este chiar momentul în care învățarea începe. 🌿

You’ll find us all in Sibiel - children, parents, friends and everyone who believes in childhood lived in nature.

This year the children workshops are supported by Consiliul Judetean Sibiu and we have an entire team of friends, partners and guests rooting for one simple yet fundamental philosophy: learning happens best in nature!

We live in a world where answers arrive in 2 seconds.

Our children need, more than ever, places where answers don’t come at all — and have to be discovered.

Every step on that log is a tiny risk judgment: *can I? can’t I? how do I shift my weight?*

Norwegian researcher Ellen Sandseter has documented this kind of “risky play” as essential to developing genuine risk-assessment ability — a skill no AI can practice on a child’s behalf. You can ask a model to calculate a risk.

You can’t ask a model to *feel* it in your own body.

In a world where any curiosity can be “solved” instantly with a search, this moment — being outdoors, smelling, touching, sorting herbs into a hat — is a form of learning you can’t speed up.

Children need “unproductive” time like this: research on free play consistently shows that unstructured, self-paced time supports executive function (planning, self-control, cognitive flexibility) far better than directed activities or digital instant gratification.

There’s no “correct way” to build something out of sticks. Every child arrives at their own solution. This is the exact opposite of how a language model works — always searching for the most probable answer.

Divergent thinking (the ability to generate multiple original solutions to the same problem) is one of the abilities most threatened by constant exposure to ready-made answers, and one of the most strengthened by free play with natural materials.

Emotional co-regulation — the ability to calm yourself and others through physical presence and real connection — remains one of the most human abilities, and one of the least replaceable.

A child reaching for a friend’s help on a difficult stretch of trail is practicing exactly what social neuroscience calls “interpersonal regulation” — a foundation for later emotional intelligence.

We’re not raising children against technology.
We’re raising children who have roots beyond the digital ones.

🌲 At Waldkinder, nature isn’t a break from “the real world.”
It’s where the skills no artificial intelligence can offer are actually formed.

Today, we’re sitting with some questions inspired by Caleb Collier Caleb Patton Collier’s essay series on Substack.

Every few years, a new report is published. A politician gives another speech. And the same conclusion follows:

Schools are failing.

But are they?

What if schools are actually doing exactly what they were designed to do?

For more than a century, education systems have largely been built to produce people who could fit into the society that already existed: reliable workers, compliant citizens, efficient participants in an industrial economy.

In many ways, they’ve succeeded.

So if we’re unhappy with the world we’ve created—its anxiety, disconnection, environmental crises, loneliness, polarization, and constant race for more—perhaps the real question isn’t How do we fix schools?

Perhaps it’s:

What were schools built to do? And is that still what we want?

At this school we’re building in Sibiel, we often return to a different question.
What if the purpose of education wasn’t efficiency, workforce readiness, or global competitiveness?

What if it was human flourishing?

What kind of life helps a person become deeply curious, emotionally healthy, capable of meaningful work, connected to others, and able to contribute to the world with courage and kindness?

Look at our learners building their own reading nook. This is not a woodworking class designed to teach carpentry.
This is planning together. Measuring. Making mistakes. Solving problems. Negotiating. Creating something that will become part of their shared environment.
Maybe that’s the education worth designing.
