A map illustrating the two and a half centuries of Chinese history commonly known as the age of the Warring States. During this period the Zhou dynasty's vassal states declared themselves independent.
They fought for territory as the more powerful constantly annexed weaker ones, and by the middle of the age, there were seven states left: Qin, Chu, Zhao, Wei, Han, Yan, and Qi. In 221 BCE, Qin had finally conquered and absorbed the six remaining kingdoms creating the first truly unified Chinese dynasty.
