Its name comes from a representative figure in the history of this county, Alexandru Papiu Ilarian, who fought for the rights of the Transylvanian people in the 19th century. The school has over 1000 students, aged 11 to 19 years old, divided in the:
- theoretic departament having the following profiles: real profile: intensive informatics, mathematics-informatics, natural sciences; humanistic pr
ofile: philology with bilingual/ intensive French teaching.
- vocational department with classes in the sport profile: baskteball for girls and voleyball for boys; here is also included The School Sport Club, having the following branches: athletics, basketball, football and voleyball. In the 2005-2006 school year the National Center of Excellence in Volleyball - boys has been founded in our school. The school activities take place in 33 classrooms, cabinets: history, geography, social-science, math, English language, French language, Romanian language and laboratories: computer science (4), physics (2), chemistry and biology, all equipped with computers connected to the Internet. Also, the school owns 3 sporthalls, 2 sport grounds in the open air, a hostel for sport students (33 places), a canteena, a library containing over 25.000 books, a medical cabinet and a cabinet for school and vocational counseling. Since January 2006, the school has been working as POP of RoEduNet, providing internet connections for 11 users from the educational system in our town. Since 1996 the school has been an iEARN school and it is also an active participant in the European educational projects.
