Today is the international day for elimination of violence against women.
Violence against women is a violation of fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. One in three women goes through physical and/or sexual violence; one in five experiences stalking; every second woman is confronted with sexual harassment. Women are beaten in their homes, harassed on the streets, bullied on the Internet, and not only in the poorest areas of the world, but also in our cities and neighbourhoods, sometimes even in our families. And now, even in refugees camps all over Europe.
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has published a report on violence against women in the 28 Member states of the EU. This survey is based on interviews with 42,000 women across the EU, who were asked about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including incidents of intimate partner violence (‘domestic violence’) and violence in childhood.
