One of the most valuable discussions during the MoreAdaptBSB Knowledge Exchange Group Meeting in Burgas focused on a key challenge for the future of coastal and urban resilience:

🌍 Strengthening Climate Resilience Across the Black Sea Region 🌿

From 1–3 April 2026, the MoreAdaptBSB Knowledge Exchange Group Meeting took place in beautiful Burgas, hosted by the Via Pontica Foundation.

The meeting brought together project partners, scientists, policy-makers, and regional stakeholders to exchange knowledge and strengthen cooperation on climate adaptation and ecosystem restoration across the Black Sea region.

Implemented under the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme, the MoreAdaptBSB initiative focuses on reducing vulnerability and increasing adaptability in coastal and urban areas through innovative and nature-based approaches.

From Ideas to Action: Inspiring MoreAdaptBSB Activities 🌱🌍

What does real climate action look like? For the OSAU project team, it means learning, collaboration, and innovation in practice

🌿Within the framework of the MoreAdaptBSB project, two dissemination events in Odesa brought together students, researchers, and innovators

🌿On March 18, participants visited the Botanical Garden of Odesa National I.I. Mechnikov University , gaining valuable insights into nature-based solutions and coastal green space restoration.

🌿On March 23, an Environmental Workshop on 3D Printing showcased how modern technologies can support sustainability , with students actively creating eco-friendly objects and engaging in hands-on learning

Both events highlighted the importance of cooperation, creativity, and youth involvement in shaping effective climate adaptation strategies

Building awareness, sharing knowledge – Disseminating project results at an international conference

On March 12, 2026, the results of project activities were presented at І International Scientific and Practical Conference “Security Technologies: Modern Challenges and Prospects”, organized by the Cherkasy State Technological University (Ukraine). Presentation topic: “Assessment of Climate Vulnerability of Coastal Territories as a Tool for Environmental Security: Experience of the International Project MoreAdaptBSB.”

What We Presented

The OSAU research team prepared materials highlighting the activities implemented within the MoreAdaptBSB project, including approaches to climate vulnerability assessment, restoration of green spaces, and the use of innovative tools for environmental monitoring.

Knowledge Exchange
The conference brought together well-known scholars and experts from Ukraine and abroad, creating an excellent platform to share ideas, discuss research, and strengthen cooperation between the scientific community.
The presentation by Project Manager Daria Bulysheva sparked an active discussion among participants. Researchers showed strong interest in the project’s methods and results, especially in the use of modern technologies for assessing climate risks in coastal regions.

Let’s collaborate for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future! 🌱

🌍 Field Verification Completed – Activity 1.1

After establishing the geospatial database and thematic layers, OSAU advanced to the second phase of Activity 1.1: integrated analysis and large-scale field verification.

🇧🇬 The Bulgarian partner developed the **Composite Environmental Vulnerability Index Map** for the Ukrainian project region and led the validation process.

📍 150 control points were surveyed across areas with different vulnerability levels. The fieldwork included:
✔️ GPS registration
✔️ Photographic documentation
✔️ On-site ecosystem assessment

🌱 The campaign allowed the team to:
• Verify vulnerability models by confirming land degradation, erosion, and other risk processes
• Validate climate, soil, vegetation, water scarcity, and technogenic pressure indicators
• Identify additional local risk factors not fully captured in datasets
• Gather insights from local communities on seasonal and recent environmental changes

🔎 By combining spatial modeling with systematic field validation, the project significantly strengthened the reliability and cross-border relevance of its results.

🌍 Data Collection Achievement – Activity 1.1 Completed

Partner 6 has successfully completed Activity 1.1 of the project — marking not only a technical milestone, but the development of a practical decision-support tool for climate adaptation and spatial planning.

🔎 As part of this activity, a multi-layered foundation for a Digital Risk Map of the Ukrainian cross-border region was created.

The team developed a comprehensive set of geospatial layers visualizing:

✔️ Climate trends (temperature shifts, precipitation patterns, drought risks)
✔️ Flood-prone and erosion-sensitive areas
✔️ Land use transformations
✔️ Soil and ecosystem conditions
✔️ Environmentally sensitive zones

All datasets were integrated into a unified system, laying the groundwork for a future international platform. This allows stakeholders to move beyond isolated indicators and gain a complete picture of territorial vulnerability.

🛰️ Using satellite imagery, open climate databases, environmental statistics, and advanced GIS tools, the team:

• Applied remote sensing to assess vegetation and land cover changes
• Used digital elevation models to simulate flood risks
• Integrated multiple datasets through spatial overlay techniques

The result? Fragmented data transformed into a structured, evidence-based decision-support system.

🌐 The cross-border dimension makes this achievement especially important. Climate challenges do not stop at national borders. This tool provides a shared evidence base for coordinated adaptation planning and resilience-building across the entire region.

At a time when responsible policy-making and sustainable regional development are more critical than ever, this milestone represents a strong step forward.
