"Calcutta is a vast metropolis, but for me, Calcutta meant, first and foremost, Bhowanipore – the neighborhood where the young Mircea Eliade fell in love with the beautiful Maitreyi Devi, the daughter of his professor, Surendranath Dasgupta. It took me two visits to Calcutta before I could see the neighborhood and the house where the professor lived during the time Eliade was his student. That address became a sacred geography for me. The entire Bhowanipore was a place filled with so many misteries as it carried the steps of Maitreyi and knew her secrets, and maybe witnessed her sorrow. So when Debika gifted me their book, it was a very emotional moment, as among the stories of Bhowanipore that of Maitreyi was and still is my favourite (even if not included in the present volume). Also, to my surprise, I noticed that the volume came out with the support of the Cossimbazar Royal family (among others). This is the same family that in 1928 awarded Mircea Eliade his scholarship. Due to the help of the Maharaja, Eliade was able to study Indian philosophy with Surendranath Dasgupta, at the University of Calcutta." ❤️
