What If Russia Loses? 05/03/2022

“Occupying Ukraine would be incalculably expensive. Perhaps Putin can cobble together a puppet government with Kyiv as its capital, a Vichy Ukraine. Perhaps he can muster the support required from the secret police to subdue the population of this Russian colony. Belarus is an example of a country that runs on autocratic rule, police repression, and the backing of the Russian military. It is a possible model for a Russian-ruled eastern Ukraine. In reality, however, it is a model only on paper. A Russified Ukraine might exist as an administrative fantasy in Moscow, and governments are certainly capable of acting on their administrative fantasies. But it could never work in practice, owing to Ukraine’s sheer size and to the country’s recent.”

What If Russia Loses? A defeat for Moscow won’t be a clear victory for the West.

The New Concert of Powers 10/05/2021

"The international system is at a historical inflection point. As Asia continues its economic ascent, two centuries of Western domination of the world, first under Pax Britannica and then under Pax Americana, are coming to an end. The West is losing not only its material dominance but also its ideological sway. Around the world, democracies are falling prey to illiberalism and populist dissension while a rising China, assisted by a pugnacious Russia, seeks to challenge the West’s authority and republican approaches to both domestic and international governance.

U.S. President Joe Biden is committed to refurbishing American democracy, restoring U.S. leadership in the world, and taming a pandemic that has had devastating human and economic consequences. But Biden’s victory was a close call; on neither side of the Atlantic will angry populism or illiberal temptations readily abate. Moreover, even if Western democracies overcome polarization, beat back illiberalism, and pull off an economic rebound, they will not forestall the arrival of a world that is both multipolar and ideologically diverse.

History makes clear that such periods of tumultuous change come with great peril. Indeed, great-power contests over hierarchy and ideology regularly lead to major wars. Averting this outcome requires soberly acknowledging that the Western-led liberal order that emerged after World War II cannot anchor global stability in the twenty-first century. The search is on for a viable and effective way forward."

The New Concert of Powers A great-power steering group is the best option for managing an integrated world no longer overseen by a hegemon. A global concert fits the bill.

The Case for a Duty to the City 01/03/2021

Carlo Ratti, MIT, and Saskia Sassen on the “New Normal” in urban development:

“What will New York City’s real estate market look like in the New Normal? The pandemic has had a titanic impact on every kind of property, with businesses shuttering and wealthy residents fleeing to the suburbs. Some trends, such as the shift toward remote work, are expected to continue. Even for those companies that don’t give employees the option for full remote work, many are preparing for short, 2-3-day per week in-person options.”

The Case for a Duty to the City To strengthen our cities post-Covid, let’s adopt a new principle: If you possess property, you should not leave it empty.

Paint, Poems and Protest Anthems: Myanmar’s Coup Inspires the Art of Defiance 18/02/2021

“During daily street rallies in the country’s major cities, the atmosphere often has the feel of a cultural carnival. Graffiti artists have spray-painted messages mocking Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the army chief who staged the coup. Poets have declaimed in angry verse. A cartoonists’ union marched holding hand-drawn figures. Street dancers twirled with abandon.

On Wednesday, in the biggest single rally since street protests began in Yangon, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in a central district, holding up posters and signs designed for the Instagram generation.

“If we look at the history of resistance in Myanmar, we were quite aggressive and confrontational, with this history of bloodshed,” said Ko Kyaw Nanda, a graphic designer whose protest art contrasts green pig heads (the army) with ruby red heels (Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi). “With this new approach, it can be less risky for people, and more people can join.””

Paint, Poems and Protest Anthems: Myanmar’s Coup Inspires the Art of Defiance The creative classes are providing a mass uprising in the country with an imaginative verve and rebellious spirit that has caught the military generals off guard.
