The Dutch disease is an economic phenomenon that occurs when a country experiences a rapid increase in its income from natural resources, such as oil or gas, leading to a decline in the competitiveness of other sectors of the economy. This occurs because the increased income from natural resources leads to an appreciation of the country's currency, making exports from other sectors more expensive and less competitive on the global market. Additionally, the influx of capital from natural resources can lead to inflation, making it harder for other sectors to compete. As a result, the country's manufacturing and agricultural sectors may decline, while the economy becomes more dependent on the natural resource sector. Finally, Dutch Disease can also lead to increased corruption, as the money generated by the natural resource sector is often controlled by a small elite.

The term "Dutch disease" was first used in the 1970s when the Netherlands experienced a decline in its manufacturing sector following the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea.
