Addiction to pills can happen before they realize it for a number of reasons

Overdose: Taking more than one’s own prescribed dose for relief of pain or anxiety may cause dependence.

Long-term use: you may become physically dependent on a drug if you use it for a long time, even if you take it as directed.

Larger dose: your body may need more to feel the same way, which means you gradually take more.

Self-medication: people might begin taking mind-altering pills to deal with stress, anxiety, or depression, and before long, they are hooked.

Escapism: pills may be taken to escape reality, or to numb emotional pain, so it’s easy to miss the warning signs.

Withdrawal symptoms: when the body gets used to the drug, discontinuing the drug can produce unpleasant symptoms that lead to continued use.

Peer pressure: having friends or family members who use pills can normalize doing so and by extension be seen as less risky.

Availability: these drugs are readily available at your local drugstore — but only with a prescription; if you have a friend or family member who is willing to share (which I don’t recommend).

Education: although its risks are well known, not everyone realizes how risky some drugs are, so misuse can be inadvertent.

Stigma: the stigma associated with addiction to drugs or alcohol can prevent individuals from acknowledging they have a problem or seeking assistance.

Addiction often develops gradually without the person knowing until it has become a problem. Understanding this layer of the mind, can help you detect signs of potential addiction early in life.

Cannabis dependence may develop because of the psychoactive component THC [tetrahydrocannabinol], which targets brain endocannabinoid system receptors and affects mood, memory, and reward.

Repeated use could induce neurochemical changes that maintain the use through alterations in the levels of certain neurotransmitters. A few people, particularly those with a genetic predisposition to mental illness or dual substance use, have an increased risk of developing a cannabis use disorder.

Withdrawal symptoms may promote continued use and may further contribute to dependence. Even the level of consumption can encourage drug-taking practices that sustain patterns of dependence.👇

What is less well known, however, is that addiction has a strong genetic component, and even affects how susceptible an individual is to a range of drugs, including alcohol.

Studies have found particular genes associated with the reward system of the brain that influence how people derive pleasure and reinforcement from addictive substances. Polymorphisms (genetic variations) in genes encoding components of neurotransmitter systems, including dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, influence susceptibility to addiction and severity of withdrawal symptomatology.

In addition, estimate from family and twin studies suggest that genetic factors contribute strongly to the risk of addictive behavior, and that understanding genetic predispositions is critical for both prevention and treatment of addiction. This genetic information may be used to develop individualized intervention and support plans for those with substance use disorders.

There are several stages the cycle of addiction can work through:

Binge/intoxication: the first time someone takes a substance, e.g. drugs, alcohol. they tend to feel a rush of euphoria due to the release of dopamine.

Withdrawal/negative affect: as the effects of the substance disappear the individual becomes symptomatic and anxiety-inducing.

Preoccupation/anticipation: cravings of substance will arise, drawing on the user with a focus to satisfy him or herself of obtaining and ingesting the substance again.
