Pasiunea a căpătat alte forme.
David’s story begins in a public school in the USA, where he quickly stands out to the teachers around him due to his tenacity and unique way of processing information. He is given the necessary tests, after which he is recommended for entry into the “gifted and talented” program within the public system.
Everything happens in New York, but in the meantime, the family has to return to Romania, where his parents enroll him in a public school.
From being a flourishing child, praised for his ability to find solutions to various curricular challenges, David becomes the child constantly scolded for not writing neatly, not reading in Romanian, not mastering grammar, and not solving math problems in the expected way. It all becomes overwhelming for both him and his parents. For many years, David struggles to understand why his parents are his only supporters, as his teachers do not see him as a high achiever according to the Romanian system’s evaluation standards.
He eventually gets into an arts high school in Bucharest, only to be quickly disappointed. Everything is formulaic, with no trace of creativity. The subject teachers prove to be either poorly prepared or absent.
The first time his creative ideas were noticed—despite his need for improvement in how he expressed them on paper—was during a summer camp organized by RGS, back when it was called Kleine Schule. We noticed his latent leadership skills, which he explored with great caution. When we opened the school in 2020, I told his mother to bring him to us. This marked the beginning of a new journey of self-exploration and the discovery of creativity in many forms.
The first "aha" moment regarding his career path came late, in his final year of high school. It was after his first visit to a film set and the first film project during class hours when he realized it wasn't just about theater but also about set design. From that point on, things naturally fell into place. His passion took new forms, and the hard work he put in toward achieving his goals turned into pure enjoyment.
At RGS, we look at children from different perspectives, and that gives them wings!
Romanian Gifted School
The first school and kindergarten dedicated to gifted children in Romania. (2-5 yrs) & (6-19 yrs)
"I.L.Caragiale" Bucuresti, Arta Montajului.
Our joy is great today! David Berlo, a graduate of Romanian Gifted School, is now a student at UNATC I.L. Caragiale, Film and TV Imaging Department.
There are only a few spots available (12), and the number of applicants far exceeds the number of places. The film classes (film creation - practical work) and Media Studies classes (deepening knowledge of cinematic grammar and semantics) at our school helped him realize that this is the career path he wanted and what the requirements for the university are. The projects he participated in were instrumental in helping him achieve his goal. Special thanks to Daniela, our teacher!
Daniela is a master's student at U.N.A.T.C. "I.L. Caragiale" Bucharest, in Film Editing. She is also a teaching assistant at the same university.
I’ll leave you with one of the projects that impressed me! Teamwork was incredibly important!
Are you passionate about biology and chemistry? Or perhaps you have artistic and linguistic inclinations!
Come visit us and take the WISC-V test, now available in English. The testing is designed for children aged 6 to 16. Based on the results, we will be discussing a possible enrollment in our institution, Romanian Gifted School!
