As Dem Radulescu said: "- It got warm, it snowed...", so I took advantage of the sunny days and went out to take pictures of some interesting "objects" that I wanted to document since last year, but I didn't get around to it.
These are the gazebos / turrets / aerial observation points / sector observation points or whatever you want to call them. Comparing street-level and aerial photos, they were most likely built in the early 1950s with the panic and fear of possible chemical, nuclear bomb attacks, etc.
Most of them are located on ministry buildings from the Cold War years, key telecommunications points (telex/telegraph/telephone), post buildings, industrial centers, transport hubs - Gara de Nord, buildings that in their vast majority were/are also equipped with underground command shelters. Their shape is similar to pillboxes, with 6 metal slots that offered a 360-degree panoramic view, the slots could be closed and were fitted with bulletproof windows (at least that's what it seems from the pictures), access being through a metal door. The construction seems to be modular, and they could be placed on the roof on platforms (see the case of the former Vitan Post Office building), which is why most of them could be destroyed without affecting the structure of the related building.
They were most certainly used for observations during the 1989 Revolution to scan for "terrorists", the one on the Telephone Palace was certainly used for this purpose due to its positioning in the University / Royal Palace area.
In the pictures you will find in order: APACA Garment Factory, the former Telex/Telegraph Central, Gara de Nord, the former building of the Ministry of Metallurgy and Machine Construction, Telephone Palace, the former Vitan Post Office.
I will search through aerial photos from the 50s-60s to see if such positions appear, but since all the industrial centers were completely destroyed ... it is difficult to verify in the field.
However, as we can still see written on walls in the city: "Look at the sky", who knows, maybe you will come across such a random observer.
