The National School of Fine Arts was founded on October 5th 1864 by decree signed by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza and following efforts made by painters Theodor Aman and Gheorghe Tattarescu. At that time the courses extended over a period of 5 years. In 1904 the School of decorative Arts was founded. In 1909 Spiru Haret endorsed the directive for internal administration of the School of Arts, thereby stating the compulsory entrance exam, acknowledging the separation of the School of Architecture and approving a selection method by the end of the first year of study.
