English often uses abbreviations of Latin words or phrases.
✍️ They often appear in informal writing when needing to fit a lot of text into a small space.
✍️ They can make sentences easier to read.
✍️ They normally contain the first letter of each, such as ‘a.m.’ (ante meridiem).
⚠️ However, it’s important to know when to use abbreviations.
For very formal writing such as essays or reports, avoid using them at all. Instead, try to find another way of saying it, e.g. ➡️ ‘for example’.
Here are some common abbreviations.
