Meet Abigail Brown, 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) from Colgate University, who will be teaching at Universitatea din Oradea.

Abigail Brown is an alumna of Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, graduating summa cm laude with a Bachelor of Arts and honors in History. Her scholarship highlights the intersections of rural history, arts, culture, and religion through a public humanities approach. She has both curated exhibitions and conducted research for different museums, galleries, and archives, and believes in the impact of making history accessible for all.

Abigail has presented her scholarship at conferences including the American Historical Association, the New York Six Consortium, and Colgate University’s MLK Jr. Social Justice Summit. She is the recipient of the Walter Broughton ‘63 Fellowship, a Phi Beta Kappa Daniel H. Saracino Prize for Scholarship of Exceptional Merit, the Award for Excellence in History, and a Robinson Essay Prize.

While working as a Fulbright ETA at the University of Oradea, she hopes to learn more about how different forms of history, heritage, and community intersect.

Featuring Natasha Shapiro, 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright Student Researcher and recent graduate of the University of Michigan.

“My name is Natasha Shapiro, and I recently graduated from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.S. in Public Health Sciences. I’m deeply interested in a range of topics across both disciplines, though my undergraduate research focused on political polarization and religious identity.

This coming year, I will be based at the University of Bucharest Faculty of Political Sciences, where I will conduct research on collective memory, communist nostalgia, and present-day political behavior in Romania. Specifically, my research will utilize both content analysis and survey-based methods to investigate how levels of communist nostalgia relate to recent vote choice. I look forward to collaborating with my affiliates at the university and contacts at NGOs and think tanks to execute this research and learn more about Romanian political contexts.”

Introducing U.S. Fulbright Scholar Dr. Mihai Surdeanu, Professor of Computer Science at The University of Arizona, who will be conducting research at Universitatea Tehnica din Cluj-Napoca.

Dr. Surdeanu works on artificial intelligence, particularly natural language processing. He builds computer systems that process and extract meaning from natural language texts. He focuses mostly on interpretable models, i.e., approaches where the computer can explain in human understandable terms why it made a decision, and machine reasoning, i.e., methods that approximate the human capacity to understand bigger things from knowing smaller facts.

He published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, which have been cited over 22,000 times. Dr. Surdeanu’s work was funded by several United States government organizations (DARPA, NIH, NSF), as well as private foundations (the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation).

During his time in Romania, Dr. Surdeanu will collaborate with the Computer Science department at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca on research into new large language models that can understand and meaningfully participate in complex debates. If successful, these models will augment considerably the decision-making capabilities of human experts in critical domains such as healthcare and public policy.

Meet Deniza Toma, a 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) from Arizona State University, who will be teaching at Centrul Universitar Nord din Baia Mare - UTCN.

Deniza Toma is an incoming Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Baia Mare and a recent graduate of Arizona State University, where she earned an M.A. in Classical Liberal Education and Civic Leadership. As the daughter of Romanian immigrants, she focused her graduate research on the Romanian communist education system while leading a high school seminar in classical literature and poetry. In Baia Mare, Deniza looks forward to integrating classical literature into her English curriculum to foster cross-cultural dialogue through storytelling. She also hopes to draw on her background in American politics and civics while deepening her understanding of Romania's culture and history. Beyond the classroom, Deniza is eager to build lasting relationships that will inform her future career in public service.

Please meet Agustin Julian De Jesus, 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright Student Researcher and recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.

Agustin Julian De Jesus’ research focuses on medieval intellectual history and classical reception. He graduated magna cm laude from UC Berkeley as a Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellow. He majored in History, specializing in Byzantine Studies, as well as French literature. Thereafter, he was a legal administrative assistant in San Francisco’s Financial District before beginning his project under the Fulbright program. He is humbled to collaborate with the scholars at Universitatea din București. He will investigate the medieval Latin-Greek intellectual exchange through the manuscripts available at Biblioteca Academiei Române, focusing on Palaiologan-era Byzantine translation and law. He hopes to organize a Byzantine studies conference for early career scholars to foster international academic collaboration.

We’re pleased to introduce U.S. Fulbright Scholar Amy Letter, Associate Professor at Drake University, who will be teaching and writing at Universitatea „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași.

“I’m Amy Letter, a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and I am passionate about teaching. I’ve taught students at three universities in the U.S.: the University of Arkansas, Florida Atlantic University, and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I grew up working class and was a “first generation” college student, and I’m especially interested in helping other first-generation students survive and thrive in the arts.

I’m writing a novel in which a character transforms into a pre-Roman god, with themes concerning broken boundaries of time and space. In Romania I will explore historical sites of cultural collision: Dacia/Rome; Ottomans/Habsburgs; Axis/Allies; East/West. I adore the Romanian language... it feels like a beautiful living link between Romania’s past, present, and future. I anticipate my research will impact my novel-in-progress in surprising ways, and I am grateful to the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission for granting this unique opportunity for exploration and cultural exchange!”

Introducing Dr. Vasile Rus, a 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright Scholar from the University of Memphis, who will be teaching and conducting research at Universitatea POLITEHNICA din București.

Dr. Vasile Rus is a Professor of Computer Science at The University of Memphis and Director of the Data Science Research Cluster and Program. His research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational linguistics with an emphasis on developing interactive intelligent systems for education, in particular, conversational systems.

For almost two decades, Dr. Rus has been involved in various educational technology projects including systems that tutor students on computer science (iCODE), science topics (DeepTutor), reading strategies (iSTART), writing strategies (W-Pal), and metacognitive skills (MetaTutor), and currently serves on the Advisory Board for U.S. Army’s Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT). Notably, Dr. Rus is the Lead PI of the NSF-funded Learner Data Institute, a project meant to lay the foundation of a Data Science institute for transforming the education ecosystem.

While in Romania on a Fulbright Scholar Award, Dr. Rus will explore code comprehension processes and how to develop intelligent tutoring systems to improve learners’ code comprehension skills.

Meet Anne Claire Foreman, a 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (Fulbright ETA) and recent graduate of Georgetown University, who will be teaching at Universitatea din București.

Anne Claire “AC” Foreman is a corporate communications strategist with five years of experience shaping corporate reputation, executive visibility, and earned media strategies for Fortune 500 companies. Based in New York, she works at Weber Shandwick, where her clients have ranged from Boston Consulting Group and Bloomberg Philanthropies to Hilton and Nespresso. AC earned her master’s degree in public relations and corporate communications at Georgetown University, where she was awarded the 2026 Most Outstanding Student Award, and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and environmental science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an environmentalist, active marathon runner, and avid reader.

Her goals include gaining teaching experience at the University of Bucharest, deepening her understanding of media in Eastern Europe, and sharing expertise on the American media landscape, with the long-term goal of becoming a lecturer in the United States.

Say hello to Elizabeth Arnold, 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright Student Researcher and PhD candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She will be conducting research at Muzeul Național al Unirii Alba Iulia.

“My name is Liz Arnold, and I am a PhD candidate at UCLA and an archaeologist whose research explores how everyday materials can reveal broader stories about social and economic life in the past. My research focuses on Bronze Age communities in southwest Transylvania, Romania, using ceramic analysis to investigate how households engaged with local landscapes, resources, and regional networks of interaction. Through this work, I am interested in questions of craft production, mobility, and how people created meaning through ordinary objects.

As a 2026–2027 U.S. Fulbright grantee, I look forward to spending the year in Alba Iulia, continuing my collaborative work with Muzeul Naţional al Unirii Alba Iulia, expanding understandings of the region’s prehistoric archaeological heritage, and contributing to ongoing conversations about the relationship between people, place, and material culture.”

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing the U.S. Fulbrighters joining us in Romania for the 2026–2027 academic year, each bringing their own expertise, experiences, and perspectives to their host institutions and communities while also learning from the people and places they encounter along the way.

Please meet Dr. Scott Feinstein, a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from Iowa State University, who will be teaching and conducting research at Universitatea Lucian Blaga din Sibiu.

Scott Feinstein is associate professor of political science at Iowa State University where he researches and teaches on comparative and international politics. Over the years he has spent time living in Europe with research focused on the politics of ethnicity, conflict and war. His book manuscript – 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑡ℎ𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝐺𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑝𝑠 (under review by University of Michigan Press) – answers why some Soviet successor states experienced secessionist civil war after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He also published studies on international politics, including Russian and U.S. foreign affairs. Feinstein is currently interested in research on global cycles of nationalism.

As a Fulbright Scholar hosted by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu he plans to examine how political parties and institutional checks and balances shape national identity in Romania. Feinstein looks forward to scholarly collaborations and public speaking engagements as well as visiting communities throughout Romania.
