Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is a major student-centered international research university offering respected undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in Washington, DC, Doha and internationally. The establishment of the Qatar campus in 2005 continues a long history of engagement in the Middle East. Walsh School of Foreign Service, ranked number one for its Master’s program and

fifth overall for its Bachelor’s program (Foreign Policy Magazine Jan 2012), at Georgetown University has devoted itself to educating the next generation of global leaders and scholars in international relations. At the Doha, Qatar campus, students have the opportunity to major in International Economics (IECO), International History (IHIST) International Politics (IPOL) or Culture and Politics (CULP) along with earning certificates in American Studies, Arab and Regional Studies or Media and Politics.

Recent headlines about Afghanistan and Pakistan have largely focused on conflict, from the fifth anniversary of the U.S. evacuation and the Taliban’s return to power to continued attacks along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier.

A rare 1996 booklet, “The Struggles of the Frontier Province,” offers a different story.

The booklet documents the lives of 29 women from what is now the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, revealing the political, social and religious roles women played in a region whose history is too often defined by conflict.

“For decades, the Afghan-Pakistan border has been defined in global media by narratives of extremism and political turmoil,” Professor Waleed Ziad said. “My research seeks to dismantle these reductive portrayals by illuminating the region’s long-standing role as an intellectual and spiritual center.”

The booklet is among hundreds of rare materials being digitized by Ziad and his collaborators, helping preserve the region’s intellectual and cultural history and inform Ziad’s forthcoming book on 250 years of women’s religious leadership in the region.

Last week, we officially welcomed 150 talented students to GU-Q at our New Student Convocation. They represent 42 nationalities, with Qatari students making up 43% of the incoming class.

The Class of 2030 brings an impressive range of experiences, languages, talents, and ambitions to campus. From national athletes and performing artists to academic Olympiad winners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, they are already making their mark.

They’re also joining GU-Q at an exciting moment, with the launch of our new Science, Technology, and International Affairs major and new minors in Art, Heritage, and Cultural Diplomacy, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Acting Dean Clyde Wilcox encouraged students to embrace the university’s diversity and learn from those around them. “We are in a region that is in the world’s gaze, and you have an extraordinary vantage point from which to observe events as they unfold,” he said. “What you develop here is judgment about ideas, theories, and facts, and much of that learning will come from the people around you.”

What can you do with an International History (IHIS) major? For Ayah Mohammed (GU-Q ’24), it’s almost impossible to answer in one sentence.

One day, she’s advising on investment, trade and business growth across African markets. The next, she’s helping returnee migrants rebuild their lives or working to get soap and menstrual hygiene supplies into a maternity ward in Addis Ababa.

At first glance, these might seem like completely different paths. But for Ayah, they’re connected by a question she learned to ask at Georgetown University in Qatar: How did we get here?

Her IHIS major taught her to look beyond the problem in front of her, understand the forces that shaped it and, most importantly, understand the people living with its consequences.

“People have stopped recognizing the person on the other side as a human being,” Ayah said. “History humanizes. It brings empathy and context.”
