CMUQ American Culture Club

So, I forgot to get photos of the event! But despite a rocky start, I conclude that the first ever CMUQ Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball was a great success. A lot of people had fun and a lot of people learned about Mardi Gras and New Orleans, which were the goals of the event :) So, happy Mardi Gras and let the good times roll! @ Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar

I want you for the Spring Egg Hunt! Hidden around the University are colorful plastic eggs filled with candy. Keep an eye out to find some, only a few days left!

On this day in American History, 1869, John Willis Menard became the first African-American to address the U.S. House of Representatives. In the previous November Menard had won a special election held in Luisiana, but his right to be seated in the position was contested by the loser, and in the end neither man got the seat. If he had been allowed to be seated, he would have been the first African-American to serve in Congress.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated October 28, 1886, after it was gifted to the United States by France as a symbol of friendship. In 1903 an excerpt from Emma Lazarus's poem "The New Colossus," written about the statue, was inscribed on a plaque mounted inside the pedestal. The whole poem is an American favorite and reads as follows:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

On this day in American History, 1919, the Grand Canyon National Park was established as the 17th U.S. National Park.

Get ready to beam up to the American Culture Club's Star Trek Week festivities! On March 18-22 we'll be hosting a daily lunchtime event, such as making uniform t-shirts, learning some Klingon phrases (earning some major geek points), or painting our faces like aliens and posing in a photo booth! The week preceding we'll be screening the first two episodes of the latest Star Trek series, Star Trek Discovery, so you'll get a chance to get into the swing of things before we even kick of.
