“Throughout my career, the work I have done has always focused on landscape and our place within it.” – Jonah King

In “Tomorrow's Nature”, Jonah King will chart connections between the ecological intimacies, entangled histories, and emerging technologies that underpin his cross-disciplinary practice.

He often invites groups of people to enact performances informed by scientific and historical research. The resulting films, sculptures, installations, and technology projects are neither documentation nor storytelling. They are, rather, a combination of the two that weave a new perspective on shared experiences. In this lecture, Jonah King will discuss this process and the upcoming collaborative project, “Honey Fungus”, a Virtual Reality sci-fi film led by an omnipresent mycelial entity.

An accompanying workshop will explore the creation and use of digital avatars in Augmented Reality and Motion Capture. Participants will engage several software platforms and discover ways King uses avatars to approach our relationship with nature.

The conversation is moderated by Rola Khayyat, Assistant Professor at the Painting and Printmaking department at VCUarts Qatar.

Kuwaiti-Puerto Rican Artist Alia Farid works at the intersection of art and architecture. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from La Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico (Viejo San Juan), a Master of Science in Visual Studies from the Visual Arts Program (now ACT) at MIT (Cambridge, MA), and a Master of Arts in Museum Studies and Critical Theory from the Independent Studies Programme or Programa d’Estudis Independents at MACBA (Barcelona).

"I began making work somewhere in between art, architecture and urban anthropology. Today I’m still interested in these areas, but with a much more focused point on telling how informal networks are forced to make up for lack of formal structure, as one of the things I value most is the subversive quality of work that goes unnoticed."

"Born and brought up by a Ukrainian mother in Tunisia, I experienced otherness very early in my life. I learned that there is always a different perspective and that anything unquestioned is nothing but one way to see. I transformed this early experience into an artistic strategy to turn around post-colonial observation asymmetries. I will address several projects such as The Future Rewound and the Cabinet of Souls at Mosaic Rooms, London (2014), Versiegelte Zeit / Sealed Time at Kunstmuseum Bonn (2017), and -upcoming Blindstrom / Reactive current at the National Art Museum of Ukraine (2021 ). I deliberately refused to fulfill geographically, sexually, or ethnologically induced expectations in these exhibitions. I will also speak about artworks that open a critical perspective not on my origins but on European societies where I am living today."
