Cosmic and Animal Piety in Islam

Through its struggle against paganism, Islam put an end to the idolatry of natural entities. From being worshipped as idols, non-human creatures became ideal worshippers of their Creator. In line with earlier monotheistic religions, the Qurʾan and, after it, much of the Islamic tradition down to the present day, interpret natural forms and animal behaviours as signs of religious piety, depicting a created world in which the cosmos itself appears as a vast worshipper of God. For us, as urban dwellers living among devices, reading these texts offers a way of rediscovering what it means to live among other living beings.

The Family Amid Transformations and Challenges

Join us for Seminar 1: “Reluctance to Marriage and Taking Responsibility Among Young People,” exploring the psychological, economic, cultural, religious, and social factors shaping young people’s attitudes toward marriage and family life.

The seminar explores psychological, economic and cultural changes that may influence young people’s perspectives on marriage. It examines key factors impacting the decision to marry, including changing priorities, rising expectations, fear of failure and the effect of digital and social media. It also highlights the religious, educational and psychological dimensions of preparing for married life, as well as the roles of families and community institutions.

This seminar falls under Season 5 of “The Contemporary Family” cultural series, held in collaboration with the College of Islamic Studies, Minaretein Center at Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) at Qatar Foundation.

“John L. Esposito, a great friend of 40 years, passed away yesterday. I was introduced to him by another towering scholar and mentor, James Piscatori. May Allah grant him a long and healthy life. From that meeting, we grew close—we travelled together, jointly taught courses on Islam and Politics at Georgetown, and published together.

John leaves behind a longstanding legacy of brilliant scholarship, decades of remarkable service, and—most of all—thousands of loving friends across the world. His love for Jean, his wife and lifelong partner, was admirable. He spoke of her with affection in almost every conversation we shared.

John was a decent human being, moved by faith and courage. He never wavered from the side of truth or the wronged. He wrote hundreds of court affidavits in support of Muslims in legal proceedings, signed thousands of petitions and statements calling for the release of political detainees and supporting other just causes, and generously donated from his own resources to noble causes. He was a committed Catholic who held Islam and its civilization in great respect, as he did other religions.

The last time we communicated was just one day before his heart operation. I tried to console him; he responded, ‘I just want to get it over with.’

John, it is over—but not over. You will always be remembered for your enduring legacy, your courage, your generosity, and your unwavering loyalty to your friends.

May your soul rest in peace, and may Allah accept your return to Him with mercy and grace.”

CIS Professor Co-Chairs a New Global Initiative Shaping the Future of AI Ethics

The College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University is proud to announce that Dr. Mohammed Ghaly, Professor of Islam and Biomedical Ethics and Director of the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics) is co-chairing the Global Alliance for AI Ethics (GAAIE)—a pioneering international initiative dedicated to advancing ethical, inclusive, and globally representative AI governance.

Following its launch in Geneva, GAAIE convened its inaugural Advisory Board meeting, bringing together leading experts from around the world to promote a more inclusive and pluralistic approach to AI governance. By embracing diverse moral traditions and amplifying perspectives from the Global South, the Alliance aims to enrich global dialogue and help shape a more equitable and responsible future for artificial intelligence.
