Unesco Chair on Geoparks, Sustainable Development and Healthy Lifestyles

The UNESCO Chair on Geoparks, Sustainable Regional Development and Healthy Lifestyles at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is proud to be in Timor-Leste through its Chair Holder, supporting a shared vision for sustainable development rooted in the country's exceptional geological and natural heritage.
Over the coming two weeks, the mission will include field visits, engagement with national authorities, collaboration with local researchers, and capacity-building initiatives. By fostering knowledge exchange, scientific cooperation, and community engagement, the UNESCO Chair reaffirms its commitment to strengthening local capacities and promoting geoparks as catalysts for sustainable regional development, education, and well-being.
Timor-Leste represents a promising new chapter in the global effort to connect people, nature, and heritage for a more sustainable future.

🌍 Strengthening collaboration for UNESCO Global Geoparks!

On July 1, our UNESCO Chair Holder, Professor Artur Sá, proudly showcased the work of our UNESCO Chair and our commitment to supporting UNESCO Global Geoparks through scientific research, technical advice, capacity building, and training.

The event, organized by the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP), also highlighted the inspiring work of the UNESCO Chair on Geoparks and Sustainable Development in Insular and Coastal Areas, coordinated by Professor Nickolas Zouros—one of our closest partners and collaborators.

We are especially proud that Professors Artur Sá and Nickolas Zouros, coordinators of the first two UNESCO Chairs dedicated to Geoparks, also serve as President and Secretary-General of the Global Geoparks Network. Together, they continue to strengthen international cooperation and advance the global geopark movement.
