Today is World Book Day.

I think books are a great addition to your child’s (and yours! 😊) path to become a fluent Portuguese speaker. Actually, research and studies into learning a foreign language says that authentic resources in the target language (that is, resources used by everyday native speakers) are one of the best tools to learn a new language.

So here's a few tips to help you.

One of my favourite holidays in Portuguese history is coming up this weekend, a day to celebrate Democracy and Freedom; What’s not to like?

Last here I wrote a post with links to help you and your child to learn more about this. I’ve pinned the post and here’s a copy of what I wrote last year:

Today we celebrate the 25th of April, a very important day in Portugal’s recent history.

I invite you to celebrate with us, with these suggestions and a few links to learn more about the day and what was life before the 'Carnation Revolution'.

1. A link for an activity to reflect on the meaning of the word Freedom and what it means to be free. Fill in the dove with words in Portuguese.

Today's lesson with the intermediate group was on Bordalo II ( https://www.bordaloii.com ) . Have you heard of this Portuguese artist? Perhaps you've seen some of his sculptures?

Anyway, I thought this was a good opportunity to tell you a little bit more about my Portuguese lessons for intermediate/advanced students.

We started with a game of guess who (I use this game a lot, especially in the beginners stage as it gets students talking, even with very little language acquisition). We then read a small biography of the artist, did a couple of comprehension questions and after that had a very interesting conversation about art, recycling, pollution and ended the lesson with each student suggesting one small action that we can take to help care for our planet.

With this lesson students practiced expressing their opinions in a way that is meaningful for them.

Have you tried to describe what art is in Portuguese? Try it in the comments!

O que é arte? Será que tudo pode ser arte?
