When it comes to the rapidly changing streets of Notting Hill, Carlos Gomes is an expert. He's watched firsthand as traditional shops faded into small plates restaurants and independent businesses struggled - and ultimately succumbed - to rent hikes, all from the well-worn seats of Lisboa Patisserie.

A staple of Golborne Road since 1982, the Portuguese bakery is a relic of what once was, managing to survive the costly fringes of Portobello Market by championing the country's culture just as they did four decades ago. The secret to this long-running success? Hard work - and the city's best pastel de nata.
