To celebrate Kartini’s Day, 21st Century Kartini is partnering with two inspiring PhD students from Singapore: Yochi Okta Andrawina and Utami Yerikania!
Yochi is a PhD candidate in Environmental Science at Nanyang Technological University, with a research focus on tropical coastlines and coral reefs. She has presented her research in many places including, Italy, the UK, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. Before her PhD, Yochi was an Indonesia Youth Maritime Ambassador in 2017 and she studied for her Master’s degree in several countries in Europe through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Programme Marine Environment
Utami is a PhD student in Construction Materials at the National University of Singapore, and is working on 3D concrete printing. She recently collaborated with the International Synchrotron Access Programme to study materials at the atomic level - how cool is that?! She earned her master degree from Universiti Tekbologi Petronas in Malaysia. Last year, she also shared her academic experience with migrant workers in Singapore who wish to pursue a university degree through the Open University.
This year’s event also features a special session with journalist and author Feba Sukmana, who will uncover some of Kartini’s uncensored letters. Her book, The Most Beautiful Letters of Kartini (in Dutch “De mooiste brieven van Kartini”), reveals Kartini’s bold thoughts that were once censored—yet still relevant today.
