MAGIC FOREST is an EVS* project, which focuses on environmental issues and aims at persuading both young people and other community members about the importance of protecting the natural environment and combating climate change. Since the year 2011 has been declared International Year of Forests and the biodiversity of Madeira’s endemic flora and fauna is listed as the natural World Heritage Site, we find it crucial to raise awareness of the local community concerning the recovery of the island’s natural landscape. Not only does the “Magic Forest” project concentrate on conservation and protection of the area, but it also provides a ‘window’ into the natural world as it helps young people gain awareness and knowledge about the natural environment and their place within it. This project will be further developed in cooperation with local and regional authorities, such as the Municipality of São Vicente or the authorities of both Funchal Ecological Park and the Madeira’s Natural Park. Some of the activities are also planned in Porto Santo, Ilhas Desertas and Ilhas Selvagens. Assistance in planting and replanting as well as in other projects, especially in the Ecological Park of Funchal, 95% of which was devastated by the fires.

*The European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides an oppotunity to express personal commitment through unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. In this way, it seeks to develop solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, thus contributing to reinforcing social cohesion in the European Union and to promoting young people's active citizenship.
