“A Portuguesa”, o hino nacional de Portugal, foi escrita por Henrique Lopes de Mendonça e composta por Alfredo Keil.

A canção nasceu como uma forma de protesto contra o Ultimato Britânico de 1890. Na altura, Portugal tinha o projeto do Mapa Cor-de-Rosa, que pretendia ligar Angola a Moçambique através de uma faixa contínua de território em África.

No entanto, a Grã-Bretanha também tinha interesses em África e queria construir uma ligação entre o Cairo e a Cidade do Cabo. Por isso, exigiu que Portugal retirasse imediatamente as suas forças desses territórios.

Este ultimato provocou uma grande onda de revolta e patriotismo em Portugal. Foi nesse contexto que nasceu “A Portuguesa”. Mais tarde, em 1911, a canção foi oficialmente adotada como Hino Nacional de Portugal.

“A Portuguesa”, the Portuguese national anthem, was written by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça and composed by Alfredo Keil.

The song was originally created as a protest against the British Ultimatum of 1890. At that time, Portugal had a plan known as the Pink Map, which aimed to connect Angola and Mozambique through a continuous strip of land in Africa.

However, Britain also had strong interests in Africa and wanted to build a connection between Cairo and Cape Town. Because of this, Britain demanded that Portugal immediately withdraw from those African territories.

The ultimatum caused a strong wave of anger and patriotism in Portugal. In this context, “A Portuguesa” was born. Later, in 1911, it officially became the National Anthem of Portugal

Portuguese conversation classes A2–B1 in São Brás de Alportel for adult expats who already understand Portuguese but struggle to speak confidently in real-life situations.

These Portuguese conversation classes A2–B1 are designed for learners at A2 level who want to improve spoken Portuguese, gain fluency and feel more comfortable speaking with locals, at work, in shops, services, schools or daily social interactions.

The focus of these Portuguese conversation classes A2–B1 is oral communication: speaking, listening, pronunciation and practical vocabulary. Classes are small, calm and supportive, allowing you to speak without pressure and receive clear, helpful correction when needed.

This is not a grammar-heavy course. It is a space to practice real European Portuguese, build confidence and move naturally from A2 towards B1.

TRIAL LESSON - 25th February:
In order to ensure a solid and committed group that genuinely wishes to succeed in learning Portuguese, there will be a dedicated trial class for all new students. The trial class will take place on February 25th at 9:30 am.

This session has a cost of 18€, which will be fully deductible from the monthly fee should you decide to continue with the group.

If you choose not to continue, the cost of the trial class will be 10€ (non-deductible).
