MOVES-IT a new project of GECAD - European Urban Initiative

The MOVES-IT project has been approved! Among the 20 projects selected for funding under the European Urban Initiative is the MOVES-IT project promoted by the partnership between the Municipality of Matosinhos, IrRADIARE, University of Aveiro, GECAD - Institute of Engineering - Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP/IPP), GREENROOFS® - National Association of Green Roofs

MOVES-IT was selected from among 110 applications from 23 Member States of the European Union!

MOVES-IT promotes the empowerment of citizens with digital tools, contributing to transform Matosinhos into a greener, more connected and vibrant city.

MOVES-IT promotes the digitalization of public services, integrating improvements in data collection, promoting urban governance with an active contribution from the community. Data on green spaces, water resources and sustainable practices of citizens will be centralized and shared in an Urban Intelligence Center, among other collaborative, sustainable and innovative activities!

GECAD has once again been rated EXCELLENT in the evaluation process promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) for the period 2018-2024. This rating is valid for the period 2025-2029.

GECAD's great capacity to attract international and national projects and publish in the best scientific journals and conferences, the internationally recognized scientific merit of the GECAD team, the capacity to train human resources at the highest level and the impact of GECAD's activity on companies, Society and People were decisive in renewing the Excellent rating.

This week started the PhD Programme in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Engineering from ISEP - Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto / IPP - Politécnico do Porto . GECAD is the main R&D unit involved in the PhD Programme, together with INESCTEC. Departments of Informatics Engineering, and Electrical Engineering are involved as well.
In the photo of the first in-person class, we have Goreti Marreiros (Director of GECAD), Carlos Ramos and Zita Vale (both from the Board of Directors and former Directors of GECAD) sitting in front of the students. Standing and on the screen are the 20 students of the Doctoral Program. It was the first Doctorate to start at ISEP/IPP and also the first exclusively on AI in Portugal.

O Doutoramento em Inteligência Artificial e Engenharia de Sistemas Inteligentes (DIAESI) do ISEP visa fornecer uma formação científica avançada dos fundamentos da Inteligência Artificial e capacitar na Conceção e Desenvolvimento de Sistemas Inteligentes que permitam resolver problemas complexos em Empresas e outras Organizações, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento da Sociedade, tendo sempre em conta aspetos éticos e sociais.
Trata-se do primeiro Doutoramento com a designação “Inteligência Artificial” em Portugal.
O Programa Doutoral envolve 7 semestres (3,5 anos) tendo 5 unidades curriculares no primeiro ano, incluindo uma unidade curricular de preparação para o desenvolvimento da Tese de Doutoramento. Os últimos 5 semestres são vocacionados para o desenvolvimento da Tese de Doutoramento, correspondendo a uma unidade curricular plurianual.
As aulas serão desenvolvidas em regime pós-laboral (2 dias por semana).
As aulas deverão começar entre meados de setembro e inícios de outubro.

GECAD is participating in the first annual meeting CYTED thematic network - Network for large-scale integration of renewable energy into electrical systems – (P722RT0026 RIBIERSE-CYTED – https://lnkd.in/dbcUQE2k) – coordinated by
Jesus de la Casa Hernandez (University of Jaen – Spain).

The Technical University of Manabí (Ecuador) organizes this meeting of the Red RIBIERSE-CYTED- in the city of Portoviejo (Ecuador). This annual meeting will take place from October 24 to 26, 2023 in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the UTM (Portoviejo, Ecuador).

The sessions will be hybrid on the 24th and 25th, with different work sessions specific to the Network taking place on the 24th. On the other hand, on the 25th the presentation of papers by the members of the Network will take place within the 7th Scientific Convention International (CCIUTM-2023), which is also hosted by this university. Finally, on the 26th, various technical visits will be made to surrounding facilities.

We invite you to participate in an online format knowing that the group leaders will be in person in the rooms in the hosting UTM partner.

Goreti Marreiros, Director of GECAD and Vice-President of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA), participated in Rabat at the Morocco-Portugal Conference on Artificial Intelligence organized by the governments of both countries . She was part of the Portuguese delegation headed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Elvira Fortunato, while the Moroccan delegation was chaired by the counterpart Minister Abdellatif Miraoui. Goreti Marreiros was representing the Polytechnic of Portugal system and mentioned the various projects of R&D centers of the Polytechnics, in addition to having established a series of contacts to promote joint projects between the two countries in the field of AI.

GECAD Researchers receive the Best Application Paper Award in AI internacional event
Bruno Ribeiro (in the photo), Rafael Barbaroxa, João Silva, Luís Gomes, and Zita Vale received the prize by the paper "FeDis - Federated Learning Framework supported by Distributed Ledger" during the 5th International Congress on Blockchain and Applications held from 12 to 14 July, in Guimarães.
