A bioartificial pancreas was generated in the labs of the University of Coimbra, with the collaboration of i3S researchers Pedro Granja, Cristina Barrias and Bruno Sarmento. The ultimate goal is to provide an insulin shot-free life to diabetes patients.

Next Thursday, on May 25th, the exhibition "Enhancement: MAKING SENSE" is opening not at a gallery, but right here at i3S. The program includes the first session of a series of debates on enhancement. This first session is taking place at Auditorium Corino de Andrade, from 19h to 20h, and the discussion will revolve around drugs and creativity in a talk entitled "The Night of Alice".
Alexandre Quintanilha is at the helm of the debate, in which participate Teresa Summavielle - with the talk "L*D adventures underground" - and Jonathan Lewis - with a view on "Drugs in Huxley".
Following the debate, a cocktail serves as the perfect ending to the inauguration.
Everyone is invited!

O primeiro debate, a 25 de maio, das 19h às 20h será a "Noite da Alice" sobre drogras e criatividade e terá lugar no auditório Corino de Andrade.
Alexandre Quintanilha irá moderar o debate que conta com as intervenções de Teresa Summavielle, "L*D adventures underground", e Jonathan Lewis, "The Doors of Perception - a experiência visionária de Huxley".

Since this year's January and until the end of 2019, a new treatment prospect is being outlined for all patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The internacional project , in which a few i3S researchers partake, aims to increase the efficiency of RA therapy using folate-based nanodevices. The project's pre-clinical phase is under way and clinical trials will ensue.

A team led by i3S researcher Bruno Sarmento has just been awarded a €30k grant by the Gilead GÉNESE Program to further his work on nanomedicine, with the ultimate goal of developing a product capable of preventing women from contracting HIV/AIDS through vaginal contact. The team includes researcher Pedro Granja and PhD students Rute Nunes and Francisca Araújo, also working at i3S.

Nerri Project members Teresa Summavielle and Maria Rui Vilar Correia talk about what is already available, the direct and collateral risks, and the importance of being well-informed to partake in a timely discussion.

We let you know back in February that Ciência Viva is promoting a series of talks on Life Sciences Ethics every last Thursday of the month. Tomorrow, March 31st, the topic under discussion is Synthetic Biology, its potential uses and risks. i3S researcher Paula Tamagnini is one of the speakers, who joins José Matos (INIAV and Portuguese Society of Biologists) and Pedro Fevereiro (ITQB).
The session takes place at Pavilhão do Conhecimento and it's scheduled for 19h30.
