On Boxing Day 235 years ago, a chance encounter led to Beethoven being mentored by one of his musical idols. ❤️🎶

On Christmas Day 1790, Joseph Haydn arrived at Beethoven’s hometown of Bonn, Germany on his way to London. The following day, Bonn’s Elector, Max Franz, invited Haydn to a party in his honour with local musicians. No guest list survives, but Bonn’s finest pianist, a 20-year-old Ludwig van Beethoven, was almost certainly in the room.

When Haydn returned to Bonn in 1792, he took notice of the young composer's extraordinary potential. That November, Beethoven traveled to Vienna to study with Haydn, becoming his newest pupil.

Mozart’s Childhood Fear of the Trumpet

As a child, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had a deep fear of the trumpet. According to Johann Andreas Schachtner, a family friend and biographer, Mozart’s fear was so intense that merely holding a trumpet in front of him felt as threatening as pointing a gun at his chest.

Schachtner recounted an instance when Mozart’s father, Leopold, attempted to help him overcome this fear. At his father’s urging, Schachtner played the trumpet in Mozart’s presence, but the young composer turned pale and nearly collapsed, showing clear signs of distress. Had the playing continued, Schachtner believed Mozart might have suffered a fit.

However, this fear was not entirely unreasonable. The trumpet of Mozart’s time was vastly different from today’s version. The natural trumpet lacked valves and required significant skill to play properly. In the late 18th century, the trumpet’s role in the orchestra diminished due to its unpredictable nature and the declining skill of players. Many trumpeters, including Schachtner himself, were multi-instrumentalists rather than dedicated trumpet players.

Despite his early fear, Mozart later composed for the instrument, including his Trumpet Concerto in C major, KV 47c.
