CETAPS (the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies) is a research unit that brings together more than seventy senior and junior researchers predominantly based at two academic institutions: the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP) and the Faculty of Humanities and So
cial Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (FCSH – UNL). The dominant disciplinary domain of CETAPS is English Studies, as understood and practised internationally – but also as inflected by the Centre’s active awareness of its defining circumstance, culturally and linguistically. Indeed, the Centre’s founding research groups – Anglo-Portuguese Studies and Shakespeare and the English Canon: a Research and Translation Project – both have an intercultural and interlingual design as their enabling concerns, respectively involving mutual national representations (andimage studies) and an understanding that translation, both as practice and concept, epitomises a broad range of intercultural relations. This relational understanding of the Centre’s remit also involves, in disciplinary and methodological terms:
(i) extensions from the unit’s main commitment to literary criticism, translation studies and cultural studies to the discourses of historiography, geography and the visual arts;
(ii) an attention to patterns in intellectual history that can productively be approached from a comparative perspective;
(iii) a focus on utopian studies as a cross-disciplinary hub, in connection with a sharp interest in the history of representations;
(iv) an alertness to the insights that tendencies in English language teaching can afford into cultural and educational history. The Centre currently aims to consolidate the understanding of its research vocation that is described above by pursuing the following concerns and activities:
1 – organising and hosting key international academic events, reflecting the activity of one or more of the Centre’s research groups;
2 – a policy to encourage high-profile publication by its members of papers in national and foreign journals, as well as of monographs and edited collections; extending the visibility and recognition of the Centre’s periodic publications (its long-standing academic journal, Revista de Estudos Anglo-Portugueses; the electronic journal Via Panorâmica; and several other electronic publications, maintained by its research groups);
3 – a policy to encourage individual members to take part in conferences and other academic events, in order to publicise their work and contact other researchers in their field;
4 – consolidating the international programmes in which the Centre already takes part (through the activity of its members and groups) by extending the involvement of its staff in such academic ventures, but also by contributing to a regular participation of PhD students from FLUP and FCSH-UNL in seminars and other discussion fora, as a way of extending the unit’s openness to the work of young researchers.
5 – extending the Centre’s specialised bibliographic resources, through a balanced and focused acquisition policy;
