In May 2012, Danielle Morris received the news that her husband, U.S. Navy Petty Officer Taylor Morris, was badly injured while he was serving in Afghanistan. Danielle never left Taylor's side as he recovered from his injuries. She cared for him as they re-built their life together. In April 2013, Danielle was among the the first group of volunteer caregivers to receive a Pillars of Strength Scholarship which she used to complete her MBA at UMGC.

Against all odds, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Juan Perez earned his GED, joined the Marines, and chipped away at his degree for more than a decade while continuing to serve in the military. In 2017, he received his Bachelor of Science in Management Studies. Juan delivered the student address at his commencement ceremony. Reflecting on his past, he said, "There is no such thing as coincidence. There is only purpose, faith and determination. In order to succeed you have to start with believing in yourself.”

In 2022, UMGC launched a pilot program to create a digital twin campus in the "metaverse." Students put on virtual reality headsets for an immersive learning experience and attended class in a UMGC virtual classroom. In this tour of UMGC in the metaverse, UMGC program director for Web and Digital Design David Johnson discusses the benefits of this type of immersive learning in building social cohesion among students.

Glenn Girona started taking classes with UMGC in 2010 while serving in the U.S. Army. As he continued his classes, he took a position with UMGC as a National Test Center coordinator in Wiesbaden and then in Qatar. In 2015, he moved back to Germany to work as a customer relations management manager at the Europe headquarters. Glenn is proud to have a role in helping other military servicemembers achieve their educational goals.

As a military spouse, Brandi Bridgett pursued her UMGC degree from three different locations. She received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2009. A mom of three and a serial entrepreneur, Brandi is determined to leave an impact on the community. She maintains ties with UMGC as an active alumna, volunteering for events and sharing her financial and entrepreneurial expertise.

As Ricky Melendez began thinking about his post-military career, he started taking courses with UMGC while stationed in Okinawa. A first generation college graduate, he received his MBA in 2022. With MBA in hand, Ricky aspires to expand his business teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and serve as a role model for his kids.

Jermaine Montgomery completed his bachelor's degree at UMGC in 2015 and was chosen as the commencement student speaker. In a speech to his graduating class, he said, "Strive for nothing but excellence and accept no substitutes." In 2018, Jermaine completed his master's degree and was chosen to represent his graduating class once again. His inspiring words highlight the power of shaping one's own destiny.
