Porto is a northern Portuguese coastal city (the second largest), located in the south of Europe and linked to the major European cities by aircraft, train and car. There are several regular (e.g. TAP, Air France and British Airway) and low cost (e.g. Ryanair, Air Berlin and Transavia) companies operating from Sá Carneiro International Airport (for further details see Aeroportos de Portugal).
The conference venue is conveniently located to access Por to Airport. Under normal traffic conditions, the travel time to and from the airport should be about 40-60 minutes by car. However, upon arriving at the airport, the easiest way to go to the city center is by taxi or by metro. The ride by taxi is about 30 minutes and the fare should be about 25 Euros. By metro the journey is about 40 minutes long (journey from the airport to Francos or Casa da Musica Stations which are the nearest to the congress venue). Detailed information can be found at Metro do Porto website.

Fish genetics has experienced a revolution as a consequence of the progress in DNA sequencing technologies. The more traditional use of partial mitochondrial genes, such as COI or CytB, and nuclear microsatellite markers has radically expanded into whole mitochondrial and nuclear genomes.
These new increasingly complex datasets are raising many novel challenges but also a cascade of opportunities. New challenges largely emerging from these vast datasets are presently at the discussion table of the scientific community.
This symposium aims to stimulate an open debate regarding the use of Next Generation Sequencing approaches to address topics of fish genetics such as biogeography, environmental adaptation (climate change response) and comparative genomics.

Otoliths are inner ear calcium carbonate concretions used by teleost fishes to help them in orientation and balance in the water column.
However, they have unique properties, as chronological recorders, wich have been used for decades to age fish; their microstructural characteristics allow us to track several life history events; the use of the chemical composition of otoliths has gained a lot of supporter’s consequence of analytical advances; and the improvement of the image acquisition and analysis systems made the studies of the shape of the otoliths to reappear. For all these aspects, otoliths are being used as natural tracers to study population structure, migration patterns and habitat connectivity in fish.
The symposium intends to focus on all the current applications, methodological issues and future challenges of this powerful ichthyological tool.

Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are considered to be a leading cause of species decline and extinction in the world, especially in freshwater systems.
The mains goals of LIFE INVASAQUA Project are to increase public and stakeholder awareness about IAS in Spain and Portugal; and contribute to improve IAS management in freshwater and estuarine habitats.
Under this scope INVASAQUA and SIBIC will be co-organizing a Workshop on aquatic IAS Management addressed to diverse stakeholders for discussion on prevention, control & management of IAS; and a Networking on aquatic IAS European projects to facilitate the exchange of information on IAS prevention, control and management between different EU projects.

Elena Ojea is a senior researcher at CIM-Universidade de Vigo (Spain) currently leading the Future Oceans Lab, conducting research on adaptation solutions for marine social-ecological systems that allow for sustainable management, equity and livelihood support.
She was granted in 2016 with an European Research Council with an ERC Starting Grant for the project CLOCK: Climate Adaptation to shifting stocks, where she is looking at fisheries management regulations threatened by climate change.
Elena holds an undergrad in Environmental Sciences and a PhD in Economics, and has experience as a post-doc and research fellow at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), and as a visiting scholar at the Bren School for Environmental Science and Policy (USA).
She is currently involved in climate risk and vulnerability assessments in two European projects (FutureMARES and MPA-Adapt), funded by H2020 and Interreg-Med program.
She is one of the co-authors of the Blue papers on the future of seafood and the impacts of climate change on the ocean economy, commissioned by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.
Since 2018, she is contributing to working group II on impacts and adaptation, as lead author in the oceans chapter, of the IPCC 6th Assessment Report.
