The Portuguese Academy of Neuroarchitecture was honoured to participate in an inspiring NAAD Neuroscience Applied to Architectural Design session dedicated to a fundamental question.

How can we understand, measure and translate the impact of architecture on people into social, organisational and economic value?

The session explored how neuroscience is expanding our understanding of the effects of the built environment on health, wellbeing, cognition, behaviour, productivity and social connection, and how these human outcomes can generate measurable value for real estate, organisations, cities and society.

Architecture is not merely a cost or a physical asset. It can influence healthcare expenditure, employee performance and retention, learning outcomes, recovery, social cohesion, asset desirability and long-term resilience.

Understanding the economics of neuroscience applied to architecture is therefore essential to move human-centred design from aspiration to evidence-based decision-making, and to demonstrate that investing in healthier and more supportive environments can create value across the entire built-environment ecosystem.

The enthusiasm, curiosity and positive energy of the NAAD students made the discussion particularly meaningful. Their questions and contributions reflected the importance of preparing a new generation of professionals capable of connecting design, scientific evidence and economic reasoning.

A very special thank you to Davide Ruzzon and Roberto Fulciniti for their kindness, generosity and commitment to fostering such an open, and interdisciplinary environment.

We are also deeply grateful for the knowledge, perspectives and valuable contributions shared by:

Sandro Innocenti, Prologis
Tiziana Cristini, NEAR
Pierluigi Sacco
Bill Browning, Terrapin Bright Green
David Gow, Center for Houston's Future and Brain-Positive Cities
Marco Lucisano, The future in Built Environment on RISE

Bringing together perspectives from architecture, neuroscience, real estate, investment, culture, sustainability and the Brain Economy created an exceptional exchange of knowledge.

We thank everyone who made this experience so memorable.

It was a truly inspiring session, full of intellectual generosity, constructive debate and a shared belief that the built environment must be evaluated not only by what it costs to create, but by the human, social and economic value it generates.

We thank everyone who made this experience so memorable.

The Portuguese Academy of Neuroarchitecture had the honour of being represented by its Founder and President, Teresa Ribeiro, at the second edition of the Mind-Body-Space Global Symposium, which took place in Amsterdam from 6 to 10 July.

More than 150 professionals and researchers from around the world came together to reflect on an essential challenge: how can we humanise the built environment and create regenerative spaces that promote the wellbeing of people and the planet?

The symposium confirmed the emergence of a paradigm shift on the international stage, towards a more human, holistic architecture grounded in scientific evidence, biology, empathy, nature, beauty and meaning.

It is an honour for the Portuguese Academy of Neuroarchitecture to be part of this global movement and to contribute the Portuguese perspective towards the future of evidence-based architecture, centred on the human being and truly regenerative.

On May 12–13, Lisbon hosted the first WELL in Lisbon, organised by APN – Portuguese Academy of Neuroarchitecture, the International International WELL Building Institute - IWBI, and Green Lab.

With over 180 participants — architects, developers, investors, researchers, and industry leaders — the event highlighted growing interest in health, well-being, and human-centred design within Portugal's built environment.

While certified healthy buildings remain few in Portugal, the country's strong fundamentals — climate, renewable energy, culture, healthcare, and lifestyle — position it to become a leading European market in this field. Together with the Portugal Green Building Council and partners across academia, real estate, and public policy, we are building a national ecosystem for Healthy Buildings.

We were honoured by Avelino Oliveira, President of the Portuguese Order of Architects, who reminded us that Portugal once had a deeply human-centred architectural culture — and that the future of the profession lies in recovering that essence.

Our sincere thanks to all speakers, moderators, participants, sponsors, and partners. This is only the beginning — the future of the built environment must place human health, well-being, and social impact at its centre.
