LISBON – INTERNSHIP THAT CHANGES PERSPECTIVES
Students of the Zespół Szkół im. Korpusu Ochrony Pogranicza in Szydłowiec returned from
Portugal enriched with experience, competencies, and memories. On November 5th, the school
hosted a ceremonial summary of the students& #39; international internships, which took place in
Lisbon from June 30th to July 11th, 2025. The meeting, full of emotions and memories,
concluded an important chapter of the Developing Professional Competencies project,
implemented as part of the International Educational Mobility of Students, Graduates, and Vocational Education Staff project, co-financed by the European Union from the European
Social Fund+ under the European Funds for Social Development Programme 2021-2027, implemented in accordance with the principles of the Erasmus+ Programme. The total budget
of the project was PLN 281,895.91.
The project involved 25 students representing various fields of study: IT technician, food and
catering technician, hairdressing technician, hairdresser, chef, and automotive electrician. All
completed internships at Portuguese workplaces, gaining new skills in an international
environment. The IT specialists handled network configuration, hardware optimization, and
technical support. Although not every computer understood English (let alone Polish!), our
students mastered the challenges brilliantly, earning recognition—even the title of cable
wizard." The food and catering technicians and chefs transformed the school& #39;s food lab into
authentic Portuguese kitchens, where fish, seafood, and olive oil reigned supreme. The
hairdressers honed their skills by creating hairstyles and experimenting with color and cutting
techniques. The electromechanics serviced vehicles, performing diagnostics and basic repairs,
earning recognition for their professionalism and dedication.
Although the primary purpose of the trip was professional internships, there was also time to
explore the delights of Lisbon and its surrounding area. As part of the cultural program, the
students visited sites such as the impressive Jerónimos Monastery, the majestic Monument to
the Discoveries, the picturesque Belem Tower, the Cristo Rei monument towering over the
city with a breathtaking view of the Tagus River, and the historic Alfama district, with its
narrow, atmospheric streets and fado music. They also took a ride on the famous yellow tram
number 28, visited the hill with the Castle of St. George, and visited several viewpoints.
Evenings were spent strolling, tasting local dishes, and soaking up the citys atmosphere.
Pasteis de nata quickly became a favorite among the participants. Besides Lisbon itself, the
interns also visited magical Sintra, Cabo da Roca – the westernmost point of continental
Europe – and the Boca do Inferno, a place filled with the power of the elements. There was
also plenty of time to relax on sandy beaches. Each day brought new experiences, and each
moment became part of unique, unforgettable memories. The students returned enriched not
only with professional knowledg but also with social skills, greater independence, and an
openness to cultural diversity.
During the closing ceremony, participants received certificates and a Europass Mobility
document, which will enhance their CVs and improve their job opportunities. These
documents not only confirm their acquired skills but also serve as a memento of the
exceptional time spent abroad. After the official portion, there was time for informal
conversations and sweet treats, financed by the project. The students unanimously emphasized
that participating in the project was an extremely valuable experience. Working among people
from different cultures and the kindness they encountered will undoubtedly stay with them for
a long time.
The Portuguese institution DNA Europe – Vocational Training, represented by Ricardo Moreno, supported the project. They took care of the training organization, accommodation,
meals, free time, and the well-being of the participants.
