Today's is a seal of St George’s College from 1356. St George is known for being the patron saint of England, and his Saint’s day is observed in 22 other countries, but did you know that he never even came to Britain?
Learn more about the man behind the myth, and his link to Dracula, in episode 2 of our while you play the jigsaw.

Today’s is the Great Seal of Henry VIII. Attached to an annuity of 50 marks, granted to Edward Seymour in 1531, the seal shows Henry on his throne, complete with orb and sceptre, while the reverse shows Henry charging into battle astride his horse. http://orlo.uk/ntLl6

Seals were used to authenticate or validate documents, sometimes in place of a signature. They were also used to physically seal items of importance.
The term 'Great Seal' is given to seals used by monarchs, which were held in the custody of the Chancellor. A new Great Seal was made for each reign, with old seals ceremonially broken up once the reign had ended.
Seals on documents were usually made of beeswax. To make the seal, a 'matrix' was required - this was usually cast in bronze, although silver (and even gold) was used for Great Seals. Seals were either applied directly to the document or, in the case of pendant seals, were attached to documents with silk or h**p cords, or strips of parchment. Pendant seals were double-sided, consisting of the obverse (the face) and the reverse.

Today’s archive jigsaw is the gold seal of King Francis I of France, which was attached to his confirmation of a 'Treaty of Perpetual Peace' with Henry VIII in 1527. It wouldn’t last long, however. Henry ordered the invasion of France in 1543 http://orlo.uk/7n5gb
The seal of Francis I is a fine example of French goldsmith's work. On the front, it shows the king seated on a throne supported by lions and attended by angels. It reads 'Plurima servantur foedere, cuncta fide' (Most things are preserved by treaty; everything by trust). On the back are the arms of France, surrounded by the collar of the Order of St. Michael. It reads 'Franciscus Primus Dei Gratia Francorum Rex Christianissimus' (Francis I, by the grace of God the most Christian king of the French). Not to be out-done, Henry had his own gold seal made for the French copy of the treaty (possibly designed by Hans Holbein).
