Our cohort of UC Berkeley interns has reached the end of their program! During 7 weeks, students immersed themselves in a truly entrepreneurial internship, working alongside startups incubated at Instituto Pedro Nunes, working on engineering tasks, business development, and communication. From Marketing to AI Compliance or SimRacing!
On their final presentation day, they showed how they can build a board game to explain AI compliance issues, how to create actual go-to-market strategies, how to modulate fire and flood scenarios, or how resilient you need to become when approaching cold emailing potential customers.
Thank you Prof. Walter Rossas from the Universidade de Coimbra , for welcoming students and helping them understand Portuguese culture.

For the past 10 years, we have proudly had a summer program in the Azores.

This summer, our program culminated at Vaga (Space for Art and Knowledge) in Ponta Delgada, where students from RISD, Brown, and Yale presented projects that blended sustainability with local identity. Highlights included the creation of 3D bio-material tiles from local invasive plants for a new butterfly pavilion at BioKairos, and student Beth Bonenfant’s deeply personal play tracing her Azorean family roots. Each project reflected the power of community-driven design.

Thank you to our amazing faculty— Laura Briggs and Jonathan Knowles , and Edie Emanuela Meidav —for all their hard work and commitment to this program, and for standing in for us on the field!

Cheers to 10 years of partnership with the Universidade dos Açores - UAc

Lisbon as a Global City SiPN June course students recently visited the workspace of artist René Tavares, led by Prof. Tania Martuscelli (CU Boulder).
Tavares uses his art, from satirical aristocratic portraits of Black families to tributes to Angolan fishermen, to confront Portugal’s colonial past, challenge systemic racism, and celebrate the African diaspora. It was a look at how artists are actively reshaping cultural memory and reclaiming marginalized stories.
This course is designed to immerse students in Portugal’s complex narrative. It starts with the city's historical foundations, then hits the streets to explore contemporary Lisbon's culturally diverse neighborhoods, traditional businesses, and community leaders.

Thank you, René, for an amazing session and for showing us the vibrant, diverse heart of contemporary Lisbon!

It was a privilege to collaborate with the Câmara de Vila Franca de Xira to design an itinerary tailored to our group’s specific interests.

Highlights included birdwatching at EVOA | Observação de Aves , learning about the region’s rich heritage, horseback riding, and discovering the distinctive character of Vila Franca de Xira.
We aim to bring students beyond the typical tourist spots and into real connections with local communities.

Experiences like these remind us why such partnerships are meaningful, for both our students and the communities we visit.

We’re excited to share that we’ve just completed a three-week faculty-led program with Penn State University State University: “Exploring Portuguese Gastronomy and Architecture.” This immersive experience introduced students to the vibrant heritage and traditions of Portugal.
From discovering the health benefits of the Atlantic Diet to engaging in hands-on activities and exploring Portugal’s iconic architectural landmarks, each moment connected classroom learning with real-world experiences.
This program was truly shaped by curiosity, cultural exchange, and a passion for learning.

We thank all students who shared photos with us, especially Samuel De Almeida , for the lovely photos.
