Lecture: Innovative Design as a Competitive Advantage

João Domingues holds a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, with a strong specialisation in composite materials and manufacturing processes for the naval industry. He has relevant experience in high-demand academic projects, notably within the Técnico Solar Boat project, where he led the Design & Composites Department and contributed to the development of solar-powered and hydrogen-powered prototypes. He is currently working as a Composite Methodist at Catana Group Portugal, where he is
responsible for production methods, industrialisation, and production planning of composite components. Throughout his academic career, he was involved in the Naval Engineering Students’ Association, contributing to the course’s student and associative activities.

Lecture: Growth, Sustainability and Defence: the New Cycle of Portuguese Shipbuilding

Frederico Oliveira Fernandes holds a Master’s degree in Naval Engineering and Naval Architecture from Instituto Superior Técnico and is a member of the Portuguese Ordem dos Engenheiros. He began his career at Estaleiros Navais de Peniche, progressing from project engineer to Operations Director and later to Board Member. With over 18 years of experience in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, he has led national and international projects, including fishing vessels, passenger transport vessels, technical support ships, patrol units, and composite-material solutions for markets such as Angola, Mozambique, Nigeria, Algeria, Senegal and Portugal. Recognised for his strategic vision, management capability, technical rigour and strong focus on innovation, he has played a key role in consolidating Estaleiros Navais de Peniche as a reference in composite shipbuilding, market diversification and infrastructure modernisation. His leadership is grounded in values of integrity, humility and commitment to excellence—qualities consistently highlighted by colleagues, clients and partners, who regard him as both a highly capable professional and a human example of determination, dedication and team spirit.

Lecture: De-carbonizing shipping with alternative fuels and handling of liquefied gases

Hugo Loureiro holds an MSc in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. He is currently a Project Manager at Wavelenght Technology Center, where he leads engineering teams in developing cargo handling systems for liquefied gas carriers (LEG/LPG).
With extensive international experience, his background includes managing biofuel and SCR system retrofit projects at TecnoVeritas, and serving as a Project Engineer for Jan De Nul in Taiwan, focusing on offshore wind farm installations. A specialist in delivering complex projects on time and within budget, Hugo combines technical expertise in ship design with significant experience in shipyard operations and global clients relations

Lecture: The role of classification societies in accident prevention

José Delgado is a Surveyor at DNV Portugal, working on ship classification and certification. In his role, he carries out onboard inspections, technical evaluations, and compliance verification for a range of vessel types and maritime stakeholders.
He joined DNV in 2022 as a Junior Surveyor, where he developed practical experience in survey procedures, documentation review, and regulatory frameworks. Prior to that, José worked at West Sea – Viana Shipyard as a Technical Department Specialist, supporting shipbuilding and basic design activities within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
José holds a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico.

Lecture: Showcase Vera Navis Ship Design: Tamarack, and end-to-end project of a 12500 DWT cement carrier

Filipe Belga is a Project Manager at Vera Navis Ship Design with experience in basic design projects and discipline leader for Structural Engineering. Holds an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (2017). Master’s dissertation: “Seakeeping Optimization of a Fast Displacement Catamaran Based on Strip-Theory Codes.” Co-founding member of Técnico Solar Boat (2015), where he served as team leader for the Hull Department and contributed to propeller hydrodynamic design. Provided consultancy services to STEP Consolidated in 2016. From 2018 to 2019, worked at TECMAR (INEGI, Porto) as a Research Fellow on R&D projects related to hydrodynamics, CFD and renewables, including SE@PORTS, GENIALG, and PROTEVS. Joined Vera Navis Ship Design in 2019.

Lecture: Challenges and Recent Developments in Offshore Renewable Energy.

Diogo Nunes is a naval architect and analysis engineer with experience in the offshore renewable energy sector since 2020. Specialising in floating offshore wind, he has played a central role in the development and selection of floater concepts, as well as in the analysis of floating structures, mooring systems and cables. He holds a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Southampton and combines a strong technical background with a practical, solution-driven approach to complex engineering challenges, supported by experience in technical leadership and effective communication with a wide range of offshore stakeholders.

Lecture: Building andvanced composite yachts using resign infusion, prepegs and SPRINT techonology.

Fernando Sena is a leading specialist in advanced composite materials and shipbuilding, with more than 40 years of international experience across high-performance sailing yachts, commercial vessels and complex marine structures. His career spans landmark projects including world-championship yachts, America’s Cup challengers and record-breaking ocean racers. Founder and director of Trimarine Advanced Marine Projects, he has led composite engineering, construction management and innovation initiatives across the UK, Italy and Portugal, with award-winning cruising and racing yachts recognised at the highest international level.

Dylan de Melo is a Naval and Mechanical Engineer with over 15 years’ experience in the design, production and management of composite structures for the maritime and offshore industries. He is currently Chief of Operations and Partner at Trimarine Compósitos (Lisbon) and Founder & Director of Further Composites (Cape Town). He specialises in naval architecture, composite engineering and production process optimisation. He holds a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico.
