Residence Permit Renewal Process – Step by Step

● Step 1: Registration on the Renewals Portal
The applicant must register on the official Renewals Portal.
During registration, an access password will be sent to the email provided.

● Step 2: Submission of Renewal Request
After successful login, the applicant submits the renewal request.
The system automatically checks the data and verifies eligibility.

● Step 3: Payment Phase
If everything is in order, a payment guide is issued.
Payment can only be made within 24 hours after the guide is generated.
You have 10 days to complete the payment.

If you fail to pay within 10 days, the request will be automatically canceled.

● Step 4: Document Submission & Processing
Once payment is done, a receipt is issued, confirming the submission.
Your request then goes into the evaluation phase.
You may be asked for additional documents.

● Step 5: Final Decision
After review, the renewed residence permit will be issued.
You will be notified once the process is complete.

📌 Note:
Currently, this portal is only open for residence permits that expire in July 2025.
It will soon be available for permits expiring in August 2025.
The portal will also be extended to other types of renewals.

Bloco and Livre will ask Marcelo to veto the law on foreigners

The political parties Bloco de Esquerda (Left Bloc) and Livre have announced that they will ask the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to veto the recently approved law on foreigners. They strongly criticize both the content of the law — which they believe could be unconstitutional — and the process by which it was approved, without proper consultation with experts, relevant institutions, or immigrant associations.

The law concerns the regulation of entry, stay, departure, and removal of foreigners from Portugal and was passed in a final overall vote in the Parliament this Wednesday. Following this, Livre’s parliamentary leader Isabel Mendes Lopes and Bloco’s deputy Mariana Mortágua declared, after a meeting of party leaders, that they would formally request a meeting with the president to urge him to reject and veto the law.

New Nationality Law is still not regulated.

Dear Immigrants,

Please be aware that new Nationality law no 1/2024 published on 05/03/2024 came into force from 01/04/2024 but it is ineffective as the regulations for this law haven't been published yet.

As per art. 15 of this law, legal residence time is counted from the date of request as long as it is granted.

So we must wait for the regulations to be implemented that binds the criteria and requirements to start Nationality applications.

It will also clearly mention the condition whether you can apply from the date of biometrics or from the Submission of Manifestation of Interest.

Please don't create chaos among immigrants by providing incomplete information.

President of the Republic promulgated, this Wednesday, the new regulation of the legal regime for the entry, stay, exit and removal of foreign citizens from the national territory, a measure that will facilitate requests for family reunification.

AIMA portal will allow the online submission of applications for residence permits for family reunification, according to a regulatory decree published this Wednesday.

As per Article 66, Citizens residing in national territory who wish to benefit from the right to family reunification submit the respective request in the information system supporting the activity of AIMA, IP, which must contain the identification of the applicant and the family members to whom the request is made.

Why it's national holiday today ?

25th April-- Liberty Day/ Freedom Day

Today it's the 49th anniversary of Portugal's Carnation Revolution- a non-violent rebellion that ended a 50-year long dictatorship and reestablished democracy in the country in 1974 and took place in Lisbon.

The revolution was undertaken by young army officers who took less than 24 hours to bring down Europe’s longest dictatorship - nearly five decades from 1926 to 1974. The military forces quickly overwhelmed the government, sparking spontaneous demonstrations in the street where civilians ran out to mingle with the soldiers, despite being ordered to stay inside.

Portuguese people were tired of both the petty and major oppressions of the authoritarian regime. Coca Cola was forbidden, groups of three or more people were not allowed to meet on the street, political opponents were liable to arbitrary arrest and torture.

The restoration of democracy in Portugal is remembered in the date of the revolution - 25 de Abril (25th of April). The former Salazar Bridge across the Tagus in Lisbon was renamed the Ponte 25 de Abril.
